Summary:
Under the supervision of the Manager of Imaging Services and working in conjunction with the Physician/Radiologist, the Ultrasound Supervisor acts as a liaison between the Radiology Department, physicians, the public and patients of appropriate ages. The incumbent coordinates the day-to-day activities within the Ultrasound Department. The incumbent produces two-dimensional ultrasonic images of internal organs and operates equipment capable of generating information for diagnostic purposes on prenatal through geriatric patients. The incumbent will directly supervise all sonographers. The incumbent is responsible for troubleshooting all equipment within the Ultrasound Department. The incumbent is responsible for department protocols being utilized. The incumbent is responsible for administrative tasks regarding the operations of the Ultrasound Department including any satellite locations. The incumbent will be allowed non-scanning hours in which to complete these tasks. The incumbent performs duties in accordance with performance standards. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee, and Mercy proprietary information, and must handle and protect the information in accordance with hospital and system policies, HIPAA requirements, and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, and other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is accountable for employee safety and will attend safety and loss-control training, engage in injury prevention, perform accident and injury investigations including conducting root cause analysis, and assist in returning employees to regular duty. The incumbent is responsible for participating in and completing all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of the Hospital.
Responsibilities:
1. Corporate Compliance • Communicates and enforces the system-wide Corporate Compliance program for Mercy Health System of Maine. • Reports any potential or real ethical, legal or regulatory violations to the Corporate Compliance Officer. • Encourages staff to report Corporate Compliance issues either directly or through the Mercy Compliance Line (may be anonymous). • Assists with investigations into alleged violations, and the development and implementation of disciplinary and/or corrective action as indicated. • Continually assesses the department for compliance with all federal, state, local and other regulatory (Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS etc.) requirements. • Completes annual staff training, ensuring staff understanding of participation in the above. 2. Leadership and Technical Expertise. • Demonstrates ability to foster staff competency within department guidelines. • Demonstrates developmental and team building qualities to appropriately prepare staff for • a changing and flexible working environment. • Demonstrates mastery of technical skills needed to operate all equipment and perform all exams for all ages of patients. • Participates in QA program and meets QA department standards. • Prepares schedules for daily staffing and call. • Works closely with Radiologists on evaluations and procurement of new equipment and supplies necessary for practical and economical operations of Ultrasound. 3. Productivity. • Performs work with thoroughness and timeliness while maintaining department standards for safety, quality, and quantity. • Completes Kronos requirements within Mercy Hospital policy. • Conducts performance evaluations per Mercy Hospital policy. • Completes scheduled work within shift. • Displays flexibility when caseload changes. • Coordinates procedures to best utilize current staffing parameters and department needs. • Assures that all necessary documentation and charges are completed. • Coordinates the necessary equipment/personnel and resources to complete procedure in a timely manner. • Continually strives to improve and streamline the exam processes. 4. Safety. • Observes hospital and state safety requirements. • Identifies safety issues. • Participates in yearly safety instruction. • Instructs others in safety practices. • Ensures OSHA compliance for areas. 7. Patient Education. • Provides information to the patient. • Calls patient the day before the procedure to explain both the patient preparation and the exam. • Obtains complete, pertinent medical history. • Demonstrates the ability to correlate history to appropriate exam. 8. Clinical Decisions. • Produces positive outcome based on patient’s ability and condition. • Improvise appropriate steps/technique in order to complete exam in non-routine situation. • Involves additional support personnel when appropriate. • Ensures all staff and physicians working in the area practice aseptic technique. 9. Equipment. • Ensures that the equipment and room are maintained in a neat and orderly condition. • Maintains the appropriate stocking level of supplies and linens without overstocking or understocking resulting in rush orders. • Maintains a clean room with properly stored equipment. • Ensures proper maintenance of all Ultrasound equipment. 10. Performs additional duties as required or assigned. • Participates in recruitment of new procedures, equipment and referrals. • Provides input into yearly budgetary process. • Works to provide care within budget constraints. • Completes Annual Performance Review for supervised staff within established time guidelines.
Other Information:
Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of Ultrasonography with progressive experience and technical skills in Ultrasonography.
Associate degree required, Bachelor's degree preferred
License/Certifications:
Current/Active ARDMS required. Registered in two or more specialty areas of Ultrasonography.
