Akron General offers a wide range of surgical services. Whether patients require a minimally invasive procedure or a major surgery, our surgical teams are dedicated to providing patients with excellent care. As a Surgeons Assistant, you will provide primary and secondary assistance to the surgeon during operative procedures and support the surgical team in providing top-quality patient care and services to perioperative patients. Surgeons Assistant are needed for more complex plastics procedures and specialized general surgery (bariatrics, breast, robotic, etc.), neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedics and ENT cases.
A caregiver in this position works 8:00AM – 6:30PM (varying start times) with on-call requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Review the patient medical chart and associated documentation including the H&P, tests/laboratory findings, x-ray and EKG results and consent forms.
Relay pertinent information and contraindicates to the appropriate surgical team members.
Under the direct supervision of the attending staff surgeon, function as first and/or second assistant during operative procedures.
Assist the operating room team.
Position surgical patients and set up required equipment.
Perform appropriate surgical skin preparation for assigned procedures.
Assist with transporting patients to and from the surgical pavilion.
Practice body substance precautions according to established guidelines.
Maintain current knowledge of operating room issues.
Attend weekly/monthly departmental meetings and in-service programs.
Attend to on-call responsibilities as assigned and comply with the hospital's attendance policy.
Complete mandatory education and training to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant program OR completion of the Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) course OR three years of on-the-job surgery training. Completion of a military surgical technology program will meet the requirements of an accredited surgical training program.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Working knowledge of aseptic technique, its surgical application and associated standards of care.
Working knowledge of the physiological and anatomical aspects of assigned surgical procedures.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Physical Requirements:
