Surgical Assistant (Per-Diem)
+ Position Summary: To actively assist the surgeon during a surgical operation, establishing a good working team. Accountabilities/Criteria PATIENT CARE SKILLS Identifies the physiologic changes induced by surgery and uses this information to provide appropriate patient care. Identifies the physiologic changes induced by general, regional, and local anesthesia and uses this information to provide appropriate patient care. Identifies the pathophysiology of trauma, and uses this information to provide appropriate patient care. Maintains a surgically safe environment during surgery. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of surgical anatomy and operative techniques. SURGICAL/OPERATIVE INTERVENTIONS Patient positioning Prepping and draping Applying clamps Tying knots Cauterizing bleeders Sponging the operative field Holding retractors Suctioning Suturing to include following and cutting Cleaning of operative area Applying dressings Transferring patient to stretcher Job Requirements Education and Training: Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Experience and Knowledge: PA: 2 years experience as a surgical first assistant TRAUMA experience Preferred Registration, Licensure and/or Certification: ***While on Trauma call - arrival time within 15 min (on site on-call room available*** Physical Demands and Sensory Requirements: Moderate physical effort: lift/carry up to 10-30 lbs. Mostly standing/walking Occasional kneeling/crouching Frequent reaching Frequently moves/lifts equipment/supplies Manual dexterity Occasional stooping/bending Frequently handles/lifts/pushes patients Hearing sensitivity bilaterally within normal limits (0-24 db HL) (aided/non-aided) Visual acuity of 20/60 in at least one eye (with/without correction) Ability to communicate verbally Working Conditions: Anesthetic agents Biohazardous substances Chemicals/gases, flammable Energy, low level radiation Equipment, electrical Infections/contagious diseases Infectious specimens Infectious organs and tissues Cuts, sharp instruments Emergencies/crisis situations Blood Borne Pathogen Risk: Category I - Routine tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluid or tissues Protective Equipment: Eye protection Face protection Mask Medical gloves, non-sterile Medical gloves, sterile Gloves, lead Gown Lead apron Radiation safety badge Provide surgical care under the supervision of a surgeon. + Supporting surgeons before, during, and after surgical procedures. + Assists with room set up and patient positioning, handing instruments to surgeons, closing incision, and maintaining operating room cleanliness. + On-call responsibilities.
