The Surgical Associate is responsible for assisting the surgical teams with direct and indirect patient’s care. They function as a member of the surgical team under the direct supervision of a registered perioperative nurse. Additional functions include assisting with direct patient care and supporting resource and environmental management of the intraoperative setting and professional development.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 Education: 

This position requires a minimum education of a high school diploma, or the equivalent Basic Life Support (BLS)

Experience: 

One year of previous experience in a medically related setting is desired.  The incumbent must possess the ability to communicate with a variety of team members and exhibit behaviors which promote excellent customer service.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

Maintains confidentiality of all personal health information Discusses patient and staff related issues only in a confidential manner and setting, and only with those who have the right/need to know. Maintains an orderly and complete supply of inventory on the unit for items assigned Assist in patient care activities in the Operating Room under registered nurse supervision Transport patients on stretcher and beds as directed. Assist in moving patients to and from bed/stretcher to OR table using proper body mechanics Assist in patient positioning and holding limbs for surgical prepping Review the daily operative schedule to determine the equipment needs for each procedure scheduled.  Understands and applies standard precautions Comprehends and maintains proper surgical attire Understands sterile and non-sterile techniques as it relates to the surgical environment Cleans and return equipment to the appropriate storage area. Participates in the turn-over of the room Cleans surgical equipment according to manufacturer’s guidelines and following proper instructions for use (IFU) Determine daily bed needs for inpatient postoperative beds and facilitates acquisition.  Identifies and transports correct patients, specimen, and x-ray’s  Documents and verifies specimen log with the specimen. Receipt of specimens in the lab is verified with the lab tech and documented. Equipment and instruments are transported to the sterile processing department or the Bruggeman Center, as appropriate, following procedures in closed containers or case carts.  Open communication is maintained with the receiving department Maintains competencies for unit associate. Performs other duties as assigned

Salary Range:  $16.40-21.49  /hour                   Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
