Actively participates in staff meetings and gives educational presentations for the staff. Seeks opportunities, planned and or situational based to teach, coach, and mentor others, on identified learning needs. Collaborates with team members in the development and implementation of an education plan for the team. Must demonstrate evidence of a minimum of 25 CEUs per year. Maintains own education continuing education record. Maintains own record of cases and hours for biweekly submission to PCD or Management Coordinator. Provides safe therapeutic care by collaboration with surgeons and health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. Helps implement an individualized plan of care for the patient with complex needs to achieve desired outcomes. Shares data with team and supports team with surgeon. Get procedure questions asked and helps to set up to correct procedures. Make clinical decisions based on experience, patient population data, and observation in concert with the primary surgeon. Advocates patient rights from the patient/family perspective: acts as a resource to resolve issues. Seeks validation of clinical decisions from others for complex patients or unfamiliar situations. Collaborates with the health care team and other disciplines to meet the desired outcomes. Confirms procedure with surgeon and determines specific equipment needed per procedure by reviewing permit to confirm procedure and special needs. Responsible for the selection and placement of x-rays for reference. Assists in setting up OR room. Make clinical decisions based on experience, patient population data, and observation in concert with the primary surgeon. Assists in moving and positioning the patient and inserting and removal of Foley urinary bladder catheter. Responsible for placing a pneumatic tourniquet draping the patient within the surgeon's guidelines and maintaining integrity of sterile field. Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and /or technique. Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, using and applying of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement or ties, placement of ligatures, applying chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by the surgeon. Uses the electrocautery mono and bi-polar at surgeons direction, clamping, ligation, and cutting of tissue per surgeons directive. Selects and applies wound dressing per surgeon's directive; applies splints, casts, and other specialty dressings under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Assists with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life threatening events in the operating room Participates as a team member or leader with any of the section committees, or hospital committees. Acts as mentor, preceptor, or mentor to new members of the team. Participates in readying for the JCAHO and state survey visits by being able to verbalize the QI process and knowing the standards. Understands benchmarking of best practice issues. Collaborates with staff to assess learning needs and assists with educational opportunities as appropriate. Acts as preceptor when call upon. Collaborates with the team in keeping costs under control and controls wastage in the room with regards to supplies.
Additional Requirements:
Working Hours: Full-Time Days Minimum Education: Completion of Surgical First Assistant program through an accredited organization; or medical school graduate with surgical training; or completion of a surgical assistant training program during military service in the United States. Preferred: AAS in Surgical Assisting or Surgical Technologist Years of Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical First Assistant; or 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience Certification: Basic Life Support-American Heart Association Preferred: National Surgical Assistant Certification issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) License: Must meet licensure criteria and be licensed as Surgical Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire.
