Position Summary:
Assist in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients, primarily but not limited to cardiothoracic and vascular cases. Function as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.
Detailed responsibilities:
* EQUIPMENT - Set up tables, instruments and supplies required for specific operations
* PATIENT CARE - Assist in preparing and draping of patient and operating area; prepare and maintain sterile field for surgical procedures
* SPECIMENS - Assist in maintenance and care of specimens; prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
* EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and supplies
* EQUIPMENT- Maintain and ensure surgical equipment and instruments are in good working condition, and ready for patient care use
* EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Work with staff team to gather necessary supplies, equipment and instruments
* PATIENT CARE - Assist with table equipment, patient positioning, and application of plaster casts and dressings
* DOCUMENTATION - Document all patient care activities
* SPECIAL PROCEDURES - Maintain suture levels and assist in high level surgical procedures including vascular/aneurysm surgical procedures
* VASCULAR SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT: Able to operate EKOS machine, Endovascular system, Volcano system, Power injector
* VASCULAR SPECIALTY SUPPLIES – Maintain knowledge of specialty wires and balloons
* VASCULAR SPECIALTY PROCESS - Facilitate contacting interventional radiology
* CARDIAC SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT - Able to operate Balloon pump, cell saver, Medistim, Vasoview
* CARCIAC SPECIALTY SUPPLIES - Independent cannulation and knowledge of various cannulas and purpose, knowledge of valves and able to independently prepare for patient use
* STOCK - Perform restocking duties as necessary
* RELATED WORK- Assist with operating room cleaning by disposing of trash, linen, wiping surfaces, moping, etc.
* TRAINING - Act as preceptor for new technicians
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
Education:

* High School or GED Equivalent
Experience:
Essential:
2 years directly related experience in 2 or more surgical specialties including but not limited to Cardiac, Vascular, Neuro, Spine, Robotics, Eyes, Plastics, Burns
Nonessential:
Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo
Credentials:
Essential:
* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
* Certification of Surgical Technologists
Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
