The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) supports the surgical team by preparing for and assisting with moderate to high acuity surgical procedures. Under the supervision of the registered nurse, the CST anticipates the needs of the surgeon and healthcare team, ensuring a safe, sterile, and efficient surgical environment.The role involves preparing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment, maintaining the sterile field, assisting in surgery, and cleaning and sterilizing instruments post-procedure.Core Responsibilities:Surgical Preparation & Assistance:
Review surgical procedures, patient conditions, and preferences to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and team.
Prepare the operating room (OR) by setting up sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment, ensuring aseptic techniques.
Perform surgical counts with the circulator and participate in procedure time-outs for safety.
Scrub, gown, and glove the surgical team, and assist in draping the sterile field.
Pass instruments to the surgeon during the procedure, maintaining an organized back table and sterile field.
Provide assistance and suggestions to facilitate the surgical procedure as needed.
Prepare sterile dressings and assist in post-procedure specimen handling.
Post-Procedure & Instrument Care:
Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization, notifying SPD of urgent instrument needs.
Ensure proper handling of specimens and assist with the OR room turnover.
Maintain a high standard of aseptic technique and safety throughout the surgical process.
Assist with inventory control and restocking supplies.
Patient & Team Collaboration:
Provide culturally competent, patient-centered care under the supervision of the registered nurse.
Support patient advocacy and ensure safety during all phases of care.
Participate in the delivery of evidence-based care, adhering to safety protocols and accreditation standards (e.g., TJC).
Work collaboratively with the surgical team to maintain a positive and efficient working environment.
Assist with patient transport and comfort, considering patient-specific needs.
Practice Development & Education:
Complete all required competencies, training, and continuing education.
Mentor and precept new staff, students, and junior team members.
Participate in performance improvement initiatives and process optimization.
Other Duties:
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe OR environment.
Support other surgical team members with equipment and procedural tasks as needed.
Comply with all WellStar Health System policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Assist with the ordering, stocking, and organizing of supplies.
Respond to urgent needs and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (e.g., CAAHEP, ABHES) required.
Licensing/Certification:
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent certification required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist or equivalent clinical experience.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and sterile techniques.
Ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments while maintaining focus and efficiency.
Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
Proficient in basic computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel).
Ability to multi-task, delegate when necessary, and adapt quickly to changing situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in surgical technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Experience in mentoring or precepting new staff or students.
Additional certifications in specialty surgical areas (e.g., Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, etc.).
