The Surgical Tech positions patient to give best exposure for procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.

Accurately maintains log books.

Supports and assists physicians and registered nurses with procedures as directed.

Verifies proper equipment functioning and performs safety checks.

Assists with the collection of specimens collected during procedures.

Places devices to monitor vital signs on patients, including blood pressure cuffs, surgical cautery pads, cardiac monitoring electrodes, pulse oximeter sensors, and nasal cannulas.

Validates and refreshes basic professional skills though active participation at in-service trainings.

Performs processing and high level disinfection of routine upper and lower endoscopes.

Operates equipment for processing and high level disinfection of equipment including preforming daily quality control and maintains accurate documentation.

Maintains properly functioning equipment and communicates problems/issues with supervisor.

Assists in troubleshooting routine GI endoscopy equipment; problem solves equipment problems quickly and efficiently.

Maintains and assists with operation of endoscope towers and image recording systems to ensure proper documentation of procedures.

Notifies supervisor of equipment repair needs.

Assists nurses or physicians by obtaining supplies during procedures.

Puts stock away in appropriate areas in a timely manner. Keeps supply areas neat, clean, and organized, by keeping stock off the floor and in their designated areas. Restocks procedure room supplies.

Assists nurses in setting up and cleaning of procedure rooms; coordinates the proper equipment setup to ensure smooth functioning of procedure room; assists with transportation/positioning of patients as needed.

Monitors supply levels and orders supplies as needed.

May be asked to drive on behalf of the department.


Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a program in discipline preferred.

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within thirty (30) days of hire.

New hires will have ninety (90) days from date of hire to obtain American Heart Association certifications. Notwithstanding this ‘grace period’ for obtaining American Heart Association certifications, employees are not excused from being current in any and all existing certifications that are required for their position as outlined in the position job description.

Licenses:

Certification for OR Tech preferred.

Current, clean NM driver's license if asked to drive for the department.
