Surgical Technologist II aids in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the Surgical Technologist II may also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The Surgical Technologist II performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.
Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment and supplies. Ensures good working order of equipment and instruments.Assists with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients.Passes instruments to physician during surgery. Continually accounts for number and location of instruments and supplies during surgery. Maintains sterile field.Receives and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory.Safely prepares and labels all medications on the procedural field.Assists with hemostatis. Applies hemostatic agents and clips. Places clamps and sutures.Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systemsMinimum EducationGraduation from a surgical assisting program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)Graduate of a Program in Surgical TechnologyRequired SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.Certifications:X Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association X RequiredX Certification from AST X Required CAAHEP X PreferredX National Surgical Assistant Association (CSA) or the National Board of Surgical Technologists and Surgical Assistants (CSFA) required on hireMinimum Work ExperienceOne year work experience desired
