Surgical Tech - Service Line Coordinator - Spine - Full Time - Days
Position Overview: Functions as an instrument technician, coordinating and assembling appropriate instrumentation for each individual case, passing instrumentation, appropriate medications, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Follows the established plan of care and provides direct surgical care interventions within the scope of practice. Works under the supervision of RN (Circulator), the OR Supervisor, OR/CS Manager and Director of Surgical Services. In addition, collaborates with unit/hospital staff and other health professionals. Responsible for coordination of supplies, equipment, and staffing needs for each service line patient. Essential Functions : Promotes the philosophy and mission of Montrose Memorial Hospital. Uses acceptable standards of practice based on AORN/AST Standards to help the individual/family identify and meet basic health need and to achieve a positive surgical outcome. Works independently as a Scrub Technician displaying expert knowledge of surgical instrumentation for a variety of cases. Understands surgical techniques and recognizes breaks in techniques. Works closely with the Circulating RN to assist Surgeon to perform cases in a timely manner and organizes work to reduce downtime between cases. Promotes a climate in which patients can act in their own interest or intervenes when they are unable to do so. Uses nursing process, in collaboration with the Circulating RN, to provide patients education and patient care planning. Uses available resources to help bring a better understanding of specific surgical processes to fellow workers. Works to achieve desired health care outcomes by effectively utilizing human and material resources. Is accountable for the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities related to nursing practice across all roles, within the scope of practice. Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned. Communicate with caregivers across the continuum of patient flow any changes in patient status and care expectations. Assist with scheduling issues involving ancillary departments i.e. radiology, lab social services. Perform as a liaison between staff, physicians, management, educators, and patient to promote quality patient care and good customer service. Perform as a resource person to staff, physicians, and patients to provide excellent patient care. Keep current on procedures, equipment, and trends in your specialty line. Coordinate with unit-based educators to develop and maintain orientation plan for new employees and arrange in services for ongoing specialty education on new issues for all staff. Communicate changes in service line to staff, etc. through report times both verbally and with "hands on" demonstrations. Monitor scheduled patient admissions and cases for the specialty line for at least one to two upcoming days to identify potential problems with personnel and or equipment. Collaborate with materials management, central services, and other departments as appropriate to assure any needed supplies, equipment, and instrumentation are available. Make the service "user friendly" by use of effective communication and maintaining physician preference cards. Participate in making daily assignments. Actively participate in the Clinical Improvement Team process. Participate in Quality Improvement monitoring and reporting. Participate in approved research projects for the service line. Provide input to Clinical Manager, OR Supervisors and Director regarding any needs for the budgeting process . Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Education and Work Experience Education: High school diploma or equivalent. C urrent Colorado State Surgical Technologist license required. Training & Experience: BCLS Certification. Must have two years experience in orthopedic and or neurology spine. Certification preferred. Job Knowledge: Knowledge of surgical instrumentation - use, care, and cleaning. Ability to manage instruments in the variety of cases listed above. Ability to effectively communicate, verbally, and non-verbally, in a clear, concise manner. Administrative and philosophical compatibility with Montrose Memorial Hospital. Interpersonal skills and sound judgment are necessary to communicate with a wide variety of persons including patients. The ability to make appropriate decisions based on fact and knowledge is required. The ability to perform detailed work required. The ability to work harmoniously with employees required. Must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality and show good judgment. The ability to make decisions under pressure and meet deadlines required.
