Surgical Technician 1 ECH: Operating Room

Job Summary: The Surgical Technician (ST) provides high level of care by assisting with age-specific surgical procedures, practices principles of surgical asepsis, identifies breaks in the sterile field and ensures that appropriate action is taken. Anticipates needs of the surgical team and promotes efficient flow of the operative procedure, serves as a resource for specialty area and functions effectively in multiple areas. Follows policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines, utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Completion of a surgical technician course required. No experience required.

Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates basic competencies for surgical technician duties. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to surgical technician duties and practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in surgical and procedural technician duties. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibits professional behavior and a cooperative attitude at all times. Works calmly and responds courteously when under pressure. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment pertinent to position; perform technical patient care and supportive patient care activities; read preference cards accurately; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies; collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to position.

Licensures and Certifications: Surgical Technician certification preferred.  Certification may be provided by either AST (Association of Surgical Technologists) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing). Basic Life Support certification required.
