Surgical Technician 3

Job Summary: The Surgical Technician 3 works under the guidance of the circulating registered nurse (RN) and surgeon (s). Embraces new knowledge, innovations and improvements in surgical technician duties to ensure optimal clinical outcomes. Seeks clarification of duties as needed. Assists with room turn-over and completes process within goals and timeframes set by OR Quality and Process Improvement committee. Strictly adheres to the principles and safety practices of surgical asepsis. Coordinates activities with the circulating nurse and works as a team from the beginning to the end of surgery or procedure. Continually expands knowledge base and embraces new knowledge related to surgical technician duties. Refrains from performing duties requiring competency until competency is achieved, verified and documented. Assists nurse leaders and supply chain personnel to order, stock and maintain appropriate stock levels of Service Specific specialty supplies and implants for a minimum of two services. Works toward quality healthcare access for all. Performs other duties as needed. 

Education and Experience: Completion of a surgical technician course required. Five years' experience required.

Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates substantial competencies for surgical technician duties. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to surgical technician duties and practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in surgical and procedural technician duties. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibits professional behavior and a cooperative attitude at all times. Works calmly and responds courteously when under pressure. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment pertinent to position; perform technical and supportive patient care activities; read preference cards accurately; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies; collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to position.

Licensures and Certifications: Surgical Technician certification required.  Certification may be provided by either AST (Association of Surgical Technologists) or NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing). Basic Life Support certification required.
