JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist is a skilled member of the allied healthcare team who provides clinical support and/or operating room assistance under the supervision of a licensed physician. The Surgical Technologist works with a wide variety of healthcare professionals to deliver direct patient care before, during, and after procedures or surgery. The Surgical Technologist provides a safe, efficient environment for the surgical patient and staff by working in accordance with Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) standards of practice and by adhering to MCHS policies/procedures, universal precautions, and sterile technique.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Consistently provides excellent customer service while assisting with all aspects of patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures, as allowed by MCHS practice standards.
2. Performs duties specific to departmental needs, which includes, but is not limited to:
Prepares patients for visits.
Utilizes sterile technique and infection control practices to prepare the surgical field/instruments and to perform skin preparations and draping.
Provides patients and families with pre-operative and post-operative care Instructions, as directed by provider.
Assists providers with specialty-specific invasive and non-invasive procedures.
3. Documents appropriate information in electronic medical record, completes paperwork, and/or performs business support functions in accordance with MCHS policies and department guidelines.
4. Acts as a liaison and relays information between providers, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
5. Maintains inventory; orders necessary supplies as assigned.
6. Maintains working knowledge of surgical equipment.
7. Maintains clinical/surgical knowledge and continues professional growth to enhance skills through required computer-based trainings and/or clinical education programs.
8. Measures, fits, and/or assists with the application and dispensing of soft goods and other specialized devices, as pertinent to the department.
9. Actively participates in quality assurance activities and process improvement initiatives.
10. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
11. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Graduate of a surgical technologist program or military equivalent.

EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: None
Preferred/Optional:
Two years’ of healthcare experience.
One year experience as Surgical Technologist.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required:
BLS Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required within three months of hire.
May require additional specialty or department-specific certifications (where applicable).
Preferred/Optional:
BLS Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.
Surgical Technologist certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Those without the certification are encouraged to complete continuing education credits equal to the requirements to maintain certification.
Day shift variable. Call weekday and call weekend
