As a trusted member of the Labor & Delivery team, your top priority as a Surgical Technologist is a safe surgery for every patient. You’re the watch dog in the room protecting patients from harm by maintaining a sterile environment. It’s all about preparation and anticipation, ensuring the instrumentation and equipment is there when the surgeon needs it.
As a Surgical Tech you’re an extra pair of hands when needed passing out surgical instruments, positioning the patient, or sometimes, holding retractors if the surgeon asks. Stress? Your Everyday
Assist the circulating nurse with patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, care of operative specimens and room turnover.
Establish and maintain an organized sterile field.
Use proper sterilization methods for instruments prior to procedures.
Understand asepsis and the standards and techniques to addressing asepsis and takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or breaks occur.
Prepare the operating room with sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures.
Follow policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.
Perform the role of first scrub on basic surgical cases.
Anticipate the needs and assists the surgeon with retracting tissue, holding instrumentation and cutting suture.
The Must-Haves
Minimum:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
Current BLS certification
Preferred:
Surgical Technician certification
Previous experience as a surgical technologist
