Surgical Technologist Trainee - General Operating Room - Days

General Summary

Provides entry level technical skills in the operating room in accordance with established procedures, protocols, and regulations. Assists surgeon with preparation and handling of surgical instruments. Prepares operating rooms for surgery using appropriate techniques

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Maintains good academic standing in allocated Surgical Technologist online training program. Adheres to training curriculum to maintain efficient completion of program. Prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Prepares the operating room for cases by setting up table, instruments, and supplies according to type of case. Drapes patients for surgical procedures. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures, and sponges. Maintains aseptic techniques and safety standards; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Assists surgeons during operations by retracting tissues under direction. Identifies and cares for specimens. Attends regularly scheduled meetings for progress evaluation.

Common Expectations:

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s). Demonstrates a commitment to patients, visitors, and staff by: Complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

2 years In a healthcare environment. Preferred

Licenses:

Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

Enrollment in a WellSpan sponsored training program. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control. Demonstrates ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate corrective action. Demonstrates ability to function effectively and harmoniously as a team member.
