Survey Field Technician
HBK Engineering is seeking a Survey Field Technician for Baltimore, Maryland. This position is responsible for performing surveying duties, while work directly with Survey Field Leads, safety managers and project managers to meet the needs of HBK’s field services.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: Conducts surveys tq2o ascertain the locations of natural features and man-made structures on the surface and undergroundAdjusts and operates surveying instruments such as Total Station and GPS survey equipmentPerform make ready engineering for aerial plantRecords survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, and sketchesSearches for property corners and survey monumentsPositions and holds vertical rods or targets that Total Station operators use for sighting to measure angles, distances, and elevationsLay out and recovers stakes, marks, and other monumentationPerforms surveys of existing utility and/or street light poles utilizing total station, rangefinders, di-electric height sticks, target poles and/or GPS survey equipmentPerform manhole inspectionsPerform value-based engineering approach to determine best construction route and placement methodAbility to take detailed field notes and photographsWorks directly with survey crew lead to ensure proper and efficient use of survey equipmentCommunicate with landowners for access to private property as requiredMinimum Qualifications One (1) year of OSP construction, survey, or engineering experience in aerial or underground environment is requiredAbility to travel up to 90% of the time and work nights/weekends when requiredWorking knowledge of NESC rulesPerform topographic surveys, aerial utility surveys, and construction stakingOperate a variety of survey equipment, including total stations and GPSLearn and understand HBK survey methods and standardsSupport and/or lead project teams in the execution of project engineering goalsWork under the direction of a Field Lead to gain a deeper understanding of efficient surveying techniques and strategy.High school diploma or GED certificateFormal survey training preferred, but not required.Essential SkillsAbility to do outdoor standing and/or walking work every daySelf-motivated, proactive with good interpersonal communication skillsAbility to effectively communicateValid driver’s license (CDL not required)Valued but not Required Skills and ExperienceExperience with infrastructure, utility, and/or construction projectsKnowledge of total station survey equipment and GPS survey equipmentBasic proficiency in Microsoft ExcelKnowledge of AutoCADConstruction experienceSurveying experienceTools and Equipment UsedRobotic total stationTripodMotor vehicleMobile PhoneCameraGPS roverMeasuring wheelMetal detectorsPhysical RequirementsPhysically capable of moving about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkwayCapable of lifting to 40lbsAbility to walk and stand for extended periods of timeAbility to sit, kneel, and squat on a daily basis – minimal frequency of kneeling and squattingHand-eye coordination necessary to operate surveying equipment and measurementsWork EnvironmentWork safely outside in all weather conditions year-roundFrequently work in excavations areas and roadwaysOccasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibrationThe noise level in the work environment is occasionally moderate to loudMay be required to work nights or weekendsMay be required to travelBackground Check and Drug Testing Information
