The purpose of the Swimming Pool Mechanic II position is to provide leadership and guidance for the daily service, repair and preventative maintenance of PARD’s numerous swimming pools throughout the City of Austin.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to: Cleaning and back-washing filters. Maintaining pool water chemistry. Acid washing and painting of swimming pool shells. Performing cement, tile, and joint repair. Performing repair work on vales, pumps, motors, and all the components of a swimming pool system.

Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists. Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond, and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.

Pay Range $23.44 – $26.83 per hour


Hours Work/Location Schedule: Rotating/Variable 40-hour weekly schedule. Weekly shifts may include from 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. This position will work during special events, evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call, and extended shifts as needed and is subject to change based on department needs. May be required to work during city emergencies such as extreme weather events. Experience adjusting chemical feed systems for aquatic facilities. Experience with pumps and motor maintenance for aquatic facilities. Experience interpreting and complying with state code as it pertains to swimming pools/aquatic facilities. Experience working with vendors and handling work orders relating to swimming pools/ aquatic facilities.

Preferred Skills: Intermediate or above level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and SharePoint. Intermediate or above level of proficiency with iPad or similar mobile devices. Other:Ability to travel to more than one work location. Duties, Functions and Responsibilities Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Cleans and backwashes filters; maintains water treatment and pumping equipment and filters. Tests and adjusts water chemistry to meet standards for oxidation and sanitation. Drains pools and performs acid wash with aid of helpers annually or in case of an emergency; makes repairs on facilities such as tiles, line hoses, valves and benches and related surfaces surrounding the pools. Maintains and interprets operational and re-circulation efficiency of various filters and filter media systems. Inspects and assures appearance of the general pool area present no health or accident hazards to users. Checks and interprets gauges, flow meters and monitoring equipment for operational efficiency. Operates, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs pumps, motors, pipes, chemical controllers, values, filters and mechanical operating systems. Maintains inventory for repairs and maintenance of swimming pools. Paints pools deck signs, lifeguard stands and all other areas of the aquatic facilities. Winterizes pumps, motors, restrooms and all areas with the aquatic facilities. Coordinates activities on the job sites. Trains Seasonal Staff on water chemistry and sanitation to ensure protection of all piping and pumps from freezing during winter period.

Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment involved in the operation of community swimming pools Knowledge of current codes and practices established by Health Codes and national aquatic certification agencies. Knowledge of practices of operation and preventive maintenance for pumps, suction lines, drains, piping balance tanks, valves, skimmer basket, flow and control switches of each system. Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Laws. Skill in operating hand tools, powered tools and other related equipment Ability to operate and maintain pools in accordance with prescribed standards. Ability to work in confined spaces Ability to operate breathing apparatus and respirators Ability to perform normal pool cleaning services. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
