Position Description
The Switchman job involves assisting in the movement of locomotives and trains cars by throwing switches, setting brakes, coupling and uncoupling cars, observing for hazards, flagging and signaling, while maintaining proper communication and safety procedures.
Position Requirements
Performs individual switching, flagging, coupling, uncoupling, brake setting
Maintain constant watch over their assigned area and equipment, checking continually for operating hazards, malfunctioning or defective equipment, track and track obstructions
plans the movement of rail cars, giving directions to the locomotive operator
Set track switches properly, set out railcars and pick up rail cars, accordingly.
Judges braking and stopping distances in order to give proper radio signals to the locomotive operator for adequate stopping.
Must be continually aware of motorists, pedestrians, and mobile equipment and crane operations in the work area and provide point protection in the direction of the train movement
Must identify the various types of rail cars, give consideration to whether or not they are loaded or empty to estimate stopping distance
Other duties on the terminal as required by management
Must be to secure and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
Must be able to read and understand all Standard Operating Procedures
Must be able to complete all required check lists
Must be able to communicate with co workers and locomotive operator
Must be able to stay focused and maintain constant awareness of surroundings
Must be able to work out side in extreme cold and hot conditions
Occasional pushing, reaching and over head work
Occasional lifting of up to 50 - 100 lbs
