Intern will job shadow during facility and equipment repairs and w** **ill be assigned maintenance task and preventive maintenance work orders and schedules.** **Additional duties that the System Operator Waste Management Intern will gain experience in may include:** + Guiding refuse through the combustion process. + Operating all systems to ensure compliance with USEPA, MPCA, USDA and the city of Rochester regulations. + Adjusting refuse feed rates for optimal combustion efficiency, operating, and monitoring the control panel to ensure the waste combustor, wet scrubber, WESP, wastewater treatment system, Urea, and caustic systems are functioning within their designed specifications and set points. + Monitoring the data acquisition system and assists with adjustments to comply with the operating permit. + Notifying SR Systems Operator of potential failures and provides technical and mechanical assistance for repairs and modifications of facility systems. + Operating front end loader to stage refuse for the receiving conveyors and to clear the unloading area for the refuse trucks. + Operating articulating material handlers to keep refuse pits flowing to the conveyance system + Ongoing checks on all systems using the computer operating system + Operating the high-pressure boiler to provide steam to the smoke eater and infectious waste sterilizers + Record keeping on ash roll-offs, refuse deliveries, circular charts, customer regulated medical waste deliveries, regulated waste deliveries and daily logbook. + Operating fork-lift to dump ash and unload deliveries + Loading and monitors the pathological waste combustor. + Sanitizing waste carts, ensuring at least one load of sanitized carts is ready to return to the Clinic campus at all times + Performing miscellaneous housekeeping in and around the work area The primary purpose of the Undergraduate Internship is to provide an intern with relevant field experiences in their chosen field of study. One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for observing the functions and processes of the assigned work unit. In addition, the intern may be given selected work assignments to reinforce the learning experience, to assess the performance levels and to provide benefit to the work unit. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility. The duration and timing of the internship will be arranged with the intern and the sponsoring educational facility. Placement in our internship program does not provide financial assistance with relocation, housing, or transportation. Interns must pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check. **Visa sponsorship is not available for this position** **Qualifications** **Open to current students in the Facility and Service Technology (FAST) program through Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC).** The incumbent must be enrolled in a degree program from a college or university. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program. Must have authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (for example, be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee). **Exemption Status** Nonexempt **Compensation Detail** This position has a predetermined rate of $15.60 per hour. **Benefits Eligible** No **Schedule** Part Time **Hours/Pay Period** 48 **Schedule Details** Intern days set up through college will be 8:00am - 4:30pm. Extra hours could include all shifts. Day shift: 8:00am - 4:30pm. Evening shift: 3:45pm - 12:15am.
