The Mission Systems Operation contract (MSOC) has an excellent opportunity for a Systems Engineer (SE) to facilitate design changes to NASA Johnson Space Center’s Mission Systems, which include the Mission Control Center (MCC), Flight Controller Training Systems (TS) and the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF), specifically focused on IT Security projects. Our ideal IT Security Systems Engineer candidate will have a strong drive to apply and continually update his/her skill base. They will also have the skills to manage and aid in IT Security Strategy, Cyber Security, and Compliance and Risk Management which includes IT Security and Compliance Teams.
The applicant will work in a dynamic team environment and will be responsible for working with the NASA customer, users, and commercial and international partners to capture and negotiate requirements, user stories and operations concepts and then drive those change requests through the systems engineering lifecycle.
The applicant will work closely with MSOC Platform and Software Engineers, System Testers, and Project Managers to facilitate changes across all parts of these complex systems. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, are required for customer interactions. Strong initiative, teamwork and problem-solving skills are also required.
Primary responsibilities:
• Work with the customer, users, and engineers to effectively analyze user requirements, user stories, and operations concepts.
• Perform high level requirement assessments and facilitate the detailed assessments performed by the MSOC technical organizations.
• Develop and maintain schedules for work components.
• Create and/or update all documentation for design and change instruments.
• Perform post data processing, post data reduction, and data mining.
• Perform analysis, assessments, trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
• Lead systems architecture design and integration efforts.
• Provide Systems Engineering support to the MSOC implementation organizations.
• Communicate inward to the MSOC organization and outward to customer contacts.
• Work effectively in a team setting to collaborate ideas.
• Perform security assessments of all changes with potential to impact overall security posture.
• Provide recommendations, when required, to improve the overall security posture of MSOC facilities.
• Support security projects and new initiatives.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Requires BS in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or similar technical degree and appropriate certifications plus 10 – 15 years of related experience.
Required Skills:
• The ability to work independently with minimal supervision and professionally represent the MSOC organization.
• Highly motivated individual willing to learn and apply new concepts, tools, and software
• Good verbal and written communication skills, especially with other organizations
• Good problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team setting
• Demonstrated experience across various areas of the systems engineering lifecycle including requirements analysis, design, and documentation
• Broad understanding of IT Security issues regarding confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and data
Desired skills:
• Understanding of human spaceflight requirements
• Leadership skills
• Knowledge of the Mission Control Center sub-systems
• Experience with ServiceNow or a similar ITIL workflow toolset
• Experience with agile development practices
• Understanding of IT Security policies and in-depth knowledge of NIST Risk Management Framework compliance
• Knowledge of IT systems (hardware, software, networks), applications and the people who use them
• Understanding of network and system architectures and detecting security issues during system development and integration
• Understanding of the array of threats and vulnerabilities that characterize the modern-day cyber-attack
• Understanding of the roles of security incident management and security/compliance auditing
• A strong understanding of cyber exploits, common vulnerabilities, common network intrusion methods, and various cyber-attack patterns and tactics
• Background in managing and using different IT Security controls
• Possession of relevant certifications, which might include: CISSP, Associate of ISC2 for CISSP, Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC), GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC), CompTIA Security+
