Tax Manager, Property Tax
Position OverviewThe Tax Manager with a focus on property tax will lead the organization’s property tax initiatives, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations while strategically managing tax-related transactions. The manager will be responsible for overseeing property tax assessments, managing audits, and providing expert guidance on property tax implications in various business transactions. This role also involves overseeing the sales and use tax compliance team, including applicable miscellaneous taxes (e.g., beverage, etc). The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in property tax management, knowledge of sales and use tax, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

Job Description

Property Tax Strategy: Develop and implement strategic plans for managing property tax liabilities, providing expertise on the property tax implications of business

transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and property transfers; collaborating with cross-functional teams to evaluate tax impacts and managing property tax compliance vendor relationship. Review and analyze property tax assessments; identify opportunities for appeals or adjustments to optimize tax positions. In collaboration with internal stakeholders, conduct in-depth analysis of property tax data to identify trends and provide insights; prepare detailed reports for senior management on property tax positions, compliance status, and strategic recommendations.

Compliance Management: Ensure timely and accurate filing of property tax returns, real estate bill payments, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant tax laws.

Sales Tax Strategy:  Ensure timely and accurate filing of sales tax returns, including exemption certificates and other required documentation across multiple jurisdictions.

Regulatory Monitoring:  Stay updated on changes in sales tax laws and regulations; assess the impact of these changes on the organization and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.

Data Analysis: Analyze sales tax data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for tax savings; provide insights to senior management on compliance and liability.  Develop and implement best practices and procedures for sales tax compliance and reporting; streamline processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Collaboration: Work closely with finance, accounting, and operations teams to ensure proper sales tax treatment on transactions, including product categorization and service sales.

Team Leadership: Mentor and develop junior staff within the tax department; foster a collaborative environment focused on continuous improvement and learning.

Vendor Management: Manage relationships with external tax consultants, appraisal firms, and other vendors to ensure high-quality service and compliance with contractual obligations.

Training and Development: Provide training on property tax compliance and transactional taxes for internal stakeholders to promote understanding and adherence to best practices.

Work Environment: This position is able to work a hybrid schedule or remotely. Some travel may be required for property assessments, audits, or client meetings.
 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master’s degree or CPA preferred.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in property tax compliance and management.

Comprehensive knowledge of property tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.

Knowledge of sales tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements across various jurisdictions. 

Proven experience in managing complex property tax audits and assessments.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Excellent project management abilities, with a track record of managing multiple priorities effectively.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
