Tax Manager
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Tax Manager is responsible for preparing the tax compliance and reporting functions of a Real Estate Investment Trust. This includes preparing and reviewing federal, state, and local tax filings, ensuring tax compliance with REIT-specific regulations, and handling audits, . The role will also involve working closely with Sr Tax Director and external advisors to optimize the REIT's tax position.  This role requires strong combination of technical tax knowledge, strategic thinking, and ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.  Tax manager is expected to balance regulatory compliance with tax efficiency, helping the REIT to maintain its tax-qualified status while optimizing its financial performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES Preparation of quarterly and annual tax provision calculations under ASC 740 (formerly FAS 109). Work closely with the finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate financial reporting of tax positions. preparation and review of federal, state, and local income tax returns for the REIT and its subsidiaries. Prepare and process quarterly estimates Prepare monthly tax account reconciliation Resolve tax notices Assist in setting up new entities, TRS election, W9s, etc. Ensure quarterly compliance with REIT-specific tax rules, including those related to income tests, asset tests, and distribution requirements. Oversee the personal property tax rendition utilizing external vendor Research, identify and apply tax credits to enhance the financial operations of FirstKey Homes Quarterly tax depreciations utilizing Sage. Automate excel work paper utilizing Alteryx Maintain a strong understanding of ASC 740 financial accounting and reporting standards. Reinforce standards are being applied to all FirstKey Homes tax deliverables. Stay updated on federal, state, and international tax changes that may affect the REIT and its operations. Lead and implement projects assigned by the Tax Director to enhance FirstKey Homes tax strategy. Conduct tax research on complex tax issues related to real estate and REIT-specific transactions. Analyze new and emerging tax laws, regulations, and court rulings to determine their impact on the REIT. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in accounting Minimum 8 years of progressive experience with tax preparation and analysis Minimum 2 years’ experience managing and supervising direct reports to achieve organizational Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Strong understanding of ASC 740 financial accounting and reporting standards Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations. Ability to analyze complex tax issues and develop practical solutions. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Experience working in multi-state real estate, property management or similar industry Experience working in a fast pace, high-growth company Proficiency in Alteryx, Sage software, and Yardi Big 4 experiences Experience managing tax audits and working with tax authorities.
