Tax Managing Director, Nonprofit Tax Services

Job Summary:

The Tax Managing Director, Nonprofit Tax Services (Managing Director) is responsible for applying industry specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues. In this role, the Managing Director is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues. This role is also responsible for recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies. In addition, the Managing Director is a critical member of the National and regional Nonprofit Tax team and involved in the direct supervision of local nonprofit tax personnel and acts as a final reviewer. The Managing Director’s expertise should include experience with a diverse group of nonprofit organizations, including hospitals, and healthcare organizations, colleges and universities, charities and foundations and other tax-exempt organizations.  This role actively participates in the marketing, networking, and business development in an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.  The Managing Director represents both the National Nonprofit and Healthcare industry groups in industry marketing events developed by the firm. 

Job Duties:

Tax Compliance

Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”) Conducts review of T/R’s and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate Reviews 990, 990-PF and 990-T workpapers (including Schedule H and compliance with 501(r) requirements) and disclosure for audited financial statements Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include: Manages engagement to achieve engagement management metrics Practices hand-on client service delivery Works with BDO RISE Leadership to educate and train BDO RISE team to develop procedures that maximize productivity 

Research

Identifies when research is needed; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysis Acts as a Technical reviewer in area of nonprofit tax Contributes regularly to BDO’s thought leadership on nonprofit tax issues and help ‘build the brand’ through speaking at conferences, including the annual BDO Nonprofit Conference Consults with and responds to assistance from other BDO offices across the firm (nationally and internationally) on nonprofit tax issues that arise Responds to questions and consults with Alliance firm members through the BDO Tax Technical Desk on nonprofit tax questions/issues

Tax Consulting

Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes Applies expert knowledge of the process of combining tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions and maximize results in the Firm Applies general knowledge of nonprofit taxes for issue identification and resolution

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits Depending on specific role, may be required to present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Reviews work prepared by Nonprofit Tax Associates and Senior Associates, and provides review comments Acts as a Career Advisor to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers Schedules and manages workload of Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area and a CPA certification, required Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred

Experience:

Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required Supervisory experience, required

License/Certifications:

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred

Software:

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, required Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

Colorado Range:  $170,000 - $225,000                                                                                                                                                   
Maryland Range:  $170,000 - $275,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range:  $165,000 - $275,000
