POSITION: TEACHER I (M/F) BARGAINING UNIT: Professional Employees

Fitchburg Community Justice Support Center

I. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To instruct inmates/probationers/parolees/students in basic educational skills including, but not limited to, reading, arithmetic and writing. This to be done either on an individual basis or in a group setting, or both.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:[2]

Responsible for program data and maintenance of student management databasesTo instruct inmates/probationers/parolees/students, using various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstrationTo administer in-house tests (TABE, etc.) to determine appropriate grade level, and shall continue to monitor student progressTo maintain individual inmate student records and keep supervisor apprised of inmate student needs and progressTo be responsible for daily classroom activityTo report any potentially dangerous situation in the school area to the School Security OfficerTo inventory classroom materials needed and submit a report to the supervisorTo develop and administer testsPrepare course outlines and objectives according to curriculum guidelines or state and local requirementsTo use audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentationsTo evaluate, record and report inmate student progressTo grade and mark tests and examinationsTo confer with inmates/probationers/parolees/students and counselors to resolve behavioral and academic problemsTo maintain discipline in the classroomTo participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshopsSelect, store, order, issue and inventory classroom equipment, materials and suppliesTo perform any other educational duties assignedTo report for work on time and appropriately attiredTo maintain regular attendance

A. Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college, no experience necessary

B. Special Requirements:

Must be available to work for night programming

C. Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Collaborates as a team member with all staff to foster an environment for improved academic and personal outcomes for every studentAttain certification to administer required assessmentsMust communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writingThe ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writingThe ability to listen and to understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentencesThe ability to speak clearly so that it is understandable to a listenerThe ability to instruct others how to do somethingThe ability to talk to others to effectively convey informationAble to use multiple approaches when learning or teaching new thingsGeneral knowledge of teaching methodsGeneral knowledge of subject area

D. Physical Qualifications:

Minimal physical effort demanded when performing functions under typical classroom conditions.Frequently required to sit, talk, and hear.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Works under direct supervision of Director of Education.

None.

Classroom setting in prison environment.
