Job Posting Summary
Consistent with the mission of Mercy University the job responsibilities of the faculty in the OTA program focus on teaching and creating a learning environment that addresses the diverse needs of the student population. This will promote the development of qualified practitioners that will address the occupational needs of a changing society.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
+ Perform duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct/online teaching services.
+ Discuss assigned duties with the assigned instructor to support and coordinate instructional efforts.
+ Assist faculty in clarifying and demonstrating the role of the occupational therapy assistant in assessment and intervention tasks within a given practice setting.
+ Walk through the syllabus, class schedule, and assignment instructions, and review learning objectives and grading rubrics. Meetings with the course instructor, in person or virtual, are great, but this kind of coordination can also take place via email to make sure resources are available and questions are answered.
Administrative tasks
+ Assist the faculty with their class/lab record keeping, take class attendance, and maintain attendance records.
+ Reinforce the must-dos of online class meeting etiquette (see handout).
+ Distribute teaching materials such as handouts, workbooks, craft materials, or instructional resources as instructed by faculty.
+ Facilitate student computer access to online exams.
Instructional Activities
+ Reinforce administration policies and rules governing student behavior and participation as per student manual.
+ Demonstrate interpersonal skills needed for productive classroom discussion, respectful interaction with faculty and students, modeling development of appropriate therapeutic relationships.
+ Facilitate field experience discussions, attend all lectures and facilitate student learning activities through hands-on labs, or library resources.
+ Instruct and monitor students in the safe use and care of equipment and materials during lab time, to prevent injuries and damage.
+ Observe students' performance and ensure communications between student and faculty relevant to student professional development and progress.
+ Prepare lesson outlines and plans in assigned subject areas and submit outlines to instructor for review before the presentation.
+ Provide review sessions before exams, hands-on practical exams and attendance record keeping.
+ Participate in student-faculty conferences regarding students’ progress, problems, or concerns.
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
+ Two-year experience as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) a must but preferably.
+ One year experience supervising and advising clinical education students, not a must but preferred.
+ Licensed or eligible for licensure in New York State.
+ Previous teaching and research experience preferably.
+ A GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 3.0 Ability to adapt, address, problem solve and respond to students enquiries in academic and fieldwork settings.
+ Demonstrates ability to respond appropriately in emergencies, to make quick decisions in sometimes stressful situations.
+ Safely manipulates common tools used for the assessment of areas of performance and performance skills as well as functional mobility equipment, splint and adaptive equipment, modalities, and assistive technology.
+ Must be computer literate and have the patience to help students who are new to Web-based learning.
+ Uses computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
+ Ability to engage students in the online environment.
+ Functions according to the AOTA Code of Ethics (AOTA, 2020) and Standards of Practice (AOTA, 2020).
+ Participates actively in professional organizations, maintain currency in professional practice.
Compensation offered will be commensurate with the educational background and work experience of the individual.

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:
Deferred Compensation Plan
All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.
Defined Contribution Plan
Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.
If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
