Teaching Assistant to Support Remote Learning (AY 24-25 C91158)

The primary function of the Teaching Assistant (TA) is to ensure successful delivery of blended synchronous courses and the equitable participation of online learners. TAs provide technological and instructional support to courses in which there are both in-person and online learners. This position will include technology support for the faculty member, peer mentoring of other students, and tech-related communications. This position does not include grading or assessment of learning.

Scheduling Commitments:

Teaching assistants are expected to attend all synchronous/live class meetings on the Institute campus. As an example, for a 4.0 credit course, the TA may be required to attend up to 4 hours of live class sessions on campus each week. One additional hour of prep time is provided to support collaboration with the course instructor and to perform other TA duties. TAs should ensure that they are not scheduled to attend another class in the same time slot as their assigned TA course.

Roles & Responsibilities: An overview of possible duties including class & technology support, student & faculty communications, and other duties as needed.

Faculty & Class Support: General faculty support to ensure faculty are prepared to design and lead hybrid class sessions, including but not limited to collaborating on course planning, attending all live/synchronous class sessions, and supporting online learners before, during, and after class meetings. TAs may also research and share ideas for blended class facilitation in consultation with DLINQ.

Technology Support: Learning academic technology systems including Poly Studio, Cisco videoconferencing, and Zoom. Troubleshooting equipment and systems when problems occur. Supporting instructor and online learners in troubleshooting issues with academic technology. Contacting Media Services/ITS as needed.

Peer Mentoring/TA Office Hours: Meeting with students outside of class to help students work through tech challenges and keep a pulse on any trends or concerns that might arise, while honoring student confidentiality and FERPA regulations. 

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

Familiarity with technology; willingness to quickly learn Poly Studio, Cisco videoconferencing, Zoom, and other classroom technologies and solicit assistance from ITS/Media Services and/or DLINQ as needed to support the blended learning environment. Strong written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to work independently. Must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion throughout the duration of the teaching assistantship. Must not be a registered student in the course for which the teaching assistant is providing support.

Preferred Qualifications:

A quick learner with a positive attitude amid significant change. Prior classroom/teaching experience and/or experience facilitating online learning (i.e., meetings, professional development, classes) preferred, but not required.

Schedule and Logistics:

TAs are expected to attend all live/synchronous class sessions in the assigned classroom. Institute courses typically meet two weekdays per week, but class schedules vary.

Outside of class hours, TAs should keep in regular communications with the course instructor(s) and students.

Pay scale: $16.00 per hour
