Team Lead, Engineering Technician

Role Summary At Rivian, the Lead Technician will play a key role in overseeing a team of technicians within our dynamic workshop, ensuring smooth operations and the successful execution of cutting-edge vehicle development. You will coordinate cross-functional responsibilities, balance workloads, and ensure that the team has the tools and resources needed to meet our high standards for prototype testing and development. In addition to your leadership responsibilities, you will mentor and instruct technicians in advanced diagnostic and repair methodologies, while maintaining strong communication with the onsite managers on personnel, equipment, and workload updates. As a hands-on leader, you will actively contribute to the diagnosis and repair of Rivian’s electric and hybrid vehicles, including electrical, mechanical, and software systems. You will also oversee the fabrication or modification of prototype components, ensuring all work is accurately documented. Additionally, you will ensure test equipment remains operational and perform routine maintenance or repairs when necessary. Your role will include installing instrumentation, test equipment, and other components in line with engineering specifications, as well as conducting test drives to validate vehicle performance. With over 8 years of experience in the automotive industry, including extensive knowledge in electric and hybrid vehicles, high-voltage electrical systems, and CAN/LIN network protocols, you’ll provide leadership and technical expertise to ensure Rivian’s innovative vehicles meet the highest standards. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, fleet personnel, and other teams. Responsibilities Facilitate cross functional responsibilities based on work load and knowledge base of peers Instruct technicians on proper diagnostic and repair methodologies Procure needed tools/equipment for the test and development workshop Maintain a high level of communication with workshop manager pertaining to work-loads, personnel and equipment issues and needs. Perform diagnosis and repair of prototype vehicle’s electrical/mechanical/software systems Fabricate and/or modify existing prototype components/fixtures Maintain detailed records of all work performed Maintain test equipment in operational condition by performing routine maintenance and making minor repairs/adjustments as needed Install instrumentation, test equipment, and other components on prototype vehicles in accordance with engineering specifications, standards, and/or test procedures Communicate directly with engineers, parts personnel, fleet and other technicians to ensure a high level of technical support for a range of objectives Test drive vehicles on closed tracks Travel 50% Qualifications 8+ years of technician work experience in the automotive industry. Electric/hybrid vehicle experience required. Valid driver license with clean record Advanced driver training.
