Team Member (MassDOT Bridge Inspector II)

Position Summary

Incumbents of positions in this series conduct inspections and maintain and administer the Division’s inspection program for MassDOT and municipally owned bridges in accordance with the requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 23 CFR Part 650Subpart C. They also inspect bridges that do not meet the NBIS definition of a bridge and can be assigned to inspect other ancillary and appurtenant highway structures and perform other inspection related engineering duties on an as needed basis. The primary purpose of this work is to perform the inspection of bridges and ancillary highway structures in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to ensure that they are safe for the traveling public to use.

Duties and Responsibilities

Based on assignment, may lead bridge inspection teams for structures 20 feet or less that do not meet the NBIS definition of a bridge.Make recommendations on the solution of problems that may arise in inspections.Compile data and prepare reports related to the Division’s Inspection program.Acts as a Bridge Inspection Team Member by assisting the Bridge Inspection Team Leader with bridge inspections.Inspects bridges consistent with the requirements of NBIS and Department policies and procedures.Conducts all field work or inspections safely and in conformance with standards for traffic protection adopted by MassDOT.Performs calculations related to estimating structural section loss and traffic counts by using calculators, computers, and other instruments.Performs related duties such as collecting and compiling bridge data and reviewing plans and reports needed to prepare for a bridge inspection; operating inspection equipment and tools that are used as a normal part of bridge inspection.Coordinates police details necessary to perform the work in a safe manner.Act as a Resident Engineer for contracts as necessary to support inspection related activities.

Qualifications Required at Hire

Knowledge of the standard terminology and abbreviations used in civil engineering to describe bridge types and bridge components.Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of materials associated with highway and bridge construction, such as steel, concrete, and asphalt.Knowledge of basic bridge engineering principles.Knowledge of basic techniques used in the construction of bridges.Knowledge of basic plane survey conventions and terminology.Knowledge of elementary algebra and trigonometry.Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of civil engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as plans, specifications, and drawings.Ability to maintain accurate records.Ability to prepare reports which accurately and efficiently describe a field condition.Ability to work outdoors under typical environmental conditions.Ability to operate and function at heights, this includes the ability to climb ladders.Ability to perform work such as carrying ladders and equipment.Ability to operate a computer using a keyboard and/or mouse.Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in a logical sequence.Ability to work accurately with numbers, codes and/or symbols.Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.Ability to deal tactfully with others.Ability to work independently

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in bridge inspection and successful completion a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course, may be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree and Engineer-In-Training certification.II. A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the next lower Bridge Inspector Title and successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course, may be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree and Engineer-In-Training certification. The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, mining, airport, soils and materials.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMust be able to successfully complete all federal and state training required to meet federal NBIS regulations and safety standards.Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license is required.Based on assignment, SCUBA certification from a recognized educational program may be required.
