Position Summary
SUNY Geneseo is excited to seek applicants for a Technical Director in the Theatre & Dance dept. The Technical Director is primarily responsible for supervision and implementation of all production elements (lighting, sound, set construction, projection, etc.) of Theatre and Dance productions, with Music and Musical Theatre of one large musical, one medium size musical, and one-to-two plays per-year with two dance concerts per-year.
Additional duties will include events such as the President’s Convocation, Master’s Graduation, and theatre space rentals arranged by Campus Scheduling. The Technical Director ensures safe-working practices, provides minimal production management for the use of the theatre spaces by outside groups and facilitates repair and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment. Key to this position is a strong work ethic centered on excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive, collaborative relationships and communications with all artistic parties (designers, actors, directors, etc.), as well as administrative staff. The position will manage set, shop equipment and theatre space budgets. They will work with and supervise student crews and work-study/temporary service students for work calls and daily tasks while maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies, and storage facilities.

+ Bachelor’s degree by time of appointment
+ Knowledge of stage carpentry, lighting, projection, sound, stage rigging
+ Ability to teach Introduction to Technical Theatre (3 credits) each semester and one Stagecraft (1 credit) per year
+ Experience with budgets
+ Experience in supervising
+ A commitment to the campus values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s degree
+ Experience in technical theater, or other performance-based arts discipline.
+ Proficiency in theatrical set construction, safety, drafting, budgeting required with metalworking, lighting and sound design experience a plus.

Job Duty/ Responsibility
Manage set, shop equipment and theatre space budgets including the maintenance of inventory of equipment, supplies, and storage facilities and their care. Within the colleges allowed budgets, the position will manage budgets for set, lighting, sound, and projection production. They will also maintain inventories and care of equipment, supplies for the two theaters, scene shop, and storage facilities.

Supervise student crews and work-study/temporary service students for work calls and daily tasks including the building of scenery, and implementation of lighting, sound, and projection. Up to approximately fifteen work-study or temporary student employees and student crews will be supervised in the building of scenery and the implementation of lighting, sound and projection. This will also include technical and dress rehearsals, performances, and final strike of each production. The department’s Administrative Assistant will assist with paperwork and HR for these student employees.

Proficiency in theatrical set construction, safety, drafting. Position will be responsible for safe set construction and performing any necessary drafting to achieve its construction. Much of the scenery will be constructed using woodworking techniques; however, metalworking skills would be a plus.

Stage rigging and safety for scenery, projection, lighting and sound. The position will work with Health and Safety, CIT , Campus Facilities, student employees/crews, and any needed outside specialists towards the safe rigging of scenery, projection, lighting and sound equipment. This will also include working with specialists such as orchestra pit and stage lift maintenance. Within the proscenium and black box theaters, rigging will be inspected and maintained as needed.

Collaboration with directors, designers, and technicians to create productions while maintaining diversity and excellence in the arts and higher education. Collaboration will include participation in production meetings and working on each production team within the schedule while maintaining diversity, equity and inclusion within the arts and higher education.

The position will either design or support designers for lighting, sound and/or projection for productions of one large musical, one medium size musical, and one-to-two plays per-year with two dance concerts per-year with other related projects related to the use of the theaters. This includes mentoring student designers as the opportunity arises. Additional duties include events such as the President’s Convocation, Master’s Graduation, and theatre space rentals arranged by Campus Scheduling.

The teaching of 3-4 credit hours per semester in technical theatre. The position will teach courses such as Introduction to Technical Theatre (3) and Stagecraft (1) per semester demonstrating the ability to teach seated, remote, and online courses in the discipline and proficiency using state-of-the-art technologies for the classroom, including online learning platforms.
