Job Description

The Materials, Chemical, and Computational Sciences (MCCS) directorate is seeking a Technical Project Manager to join our Research Operations (ResOps) team. In your role managing complex equipment procurements, fabrications, modifications and installations for MCCS, you'll play a crucial role in supporting groundbreaking research across diverse fields such as battery development, photovoltaics, perovskites, fuel cells, nanotechnology, and renewable energy. This role is essential for ensuring safety and compliance requirements are met, budget and schedule are maintained, and research staff have the tools they need to conduct cutting edge research.

Technical Project Management:Work with project stakeholders to plan, design, fabricate, install and commission equipment for renewable energy research. Collaborate with Environment, Safety & Health to understand safety requirements and ensure they are appropriately implemented into the complete project lifecycle. Ensure appropriate readiness activities are planned and conducted as part of commissioning and handoff to researchDesign Coordinator:In the new Work Planning and Control (WPC) system, ensure that all applicable processes are followed for assigned projects.  This will include project initiation, approvals, design submission and review, worker authorizations and project closeout tasksEnsure changes in assigned projects are managed through the appropriate Management of Change process.Other dutiesCreate, assign tasks, track and close projects in the applicable Project Management databasesParticipate in plan of the week meeting with the MCCS Engineering and Informatics group to coordinate activities and request resourcesParticipate in the MCCS Project Coordination Meeting for coordination across Research Operations and Site OperationsParticipate in the Capital Equipment and similar planning processes to plan and report on project statusTrack and report on project status, financials, schedules and changesWork with project stakeholders to plan, incorporate and execute changes to projects as needed due to changes in requirements, funding, or schedules

Basic QualificationsRelevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required QualificationsProject Management: Demonstrated experience in successfully managing technical projects related to the design, build, installation, or modification of research equipment.Budget & Schedule Management: Experience in successful budget & schedule management for research projects, including cost estimation, milestone development, and tracking.Technical Background: Demonstrated understanding of the technical aspects of research equipment needed to facilitate effective communication with research staff.Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with navigating and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and approval processes associated with research equipment.

Preferred QualificationsDocumentation Skills: Proficient in producing and managing documentation required for research projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness.Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including researchers, engineers, EHS, and facility staff.Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address unforeseen challenges during the project lifecycle.Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.Quality Assurance: Experience in implementing quality requirements to ensure research equipment and installations meet project needs.Vendor Management: Experience in selecting and managing vendors for equipment procurement or modification services.Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.Continuous Improvement: Proactive in identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing best practicesProcurements: Demonstrated ability to manage complex and technical procurementsOrganizational Requirements: Experience managing and delivering projects to government organization (or similar) requirementsCertifications: Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
