ABOUT Hermosa
Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—as well as silver and lead. The project has the potential to help power the nation’s clean energy future, strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals, grow the local economy, and improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community for generations to come.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This position is based at the Hermosa Project site, near Patagonia, Arizona.
South32 seeks to hire a metallurgical or chemical engineering intern to support the development of the Hermosa Taylor Project. The role will be within the technical services team supporting the processing scope. The project is currently undertaking detailed engineering design in preparation for the construction of the concentrator.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
• Assist in design and analysis of metallurgical engineering projects.
• Review engineering documentation for accuracy and completeness.
• Ensure that vendor data for mechanical equipment aligns with the Process Design Criteria, Basis of Design, mass and energy balance.
• Provide field support for processing plant construction.
• Performance of sample preparations and metallurgical testwork.
• Review of Processing Plant design to ensure safety, operability, and maintainability.
• Participation in South32 health and safety programs.
ABOUT YOU
• Actively enrolled and in the second year or higher of Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science Engineering programs.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite programs required.
• Ability to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by South32’s policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated interest in Mine Engineering, or related field and have a strong desire to advance skills related to South32 and the Hermosa project.
• Detailed oriented.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
• Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques.
• Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
• Eager to learn about process engineering and working with interdisciplinary teams.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas professionally.
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to take direction from leadership, mentors and managers.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
