Summary

GAF is looking for a Technical Services/Quality Assurance Manager to support the construction, commissioning and operations of a greenfield asphalt shingle manufacturing plant in Newton KS. The candidate will participate in design reviews, construction and commissioning efforts. During plant construction and commissioning, the Technical Services/QA Manager will be responsible for setting up all plant process monitoring and quality assurance systems.
 

After commissioning the Technical Services/ Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for all analytical and process related initiatives at the plant. This includes ensuring compliance at all levels including product specifications, product quality, raw materials, safety and environmental. They will also provide support and resources to all departments to ensure that plant goals are achieved in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, and cost control.
 

Essential Duties

Assist Corporate design team with plant design.

Participate in design activities (detailed manufacturing and support systems designs, engineering reviews, factory acceptance testing, etc.)

Responsible for hiring and developing the process engineering and quality assurance teams.

Ensure a high level of competence and performance within the department. Ensure the existence of consistent and comprehensive job standards, procedures, and quality requirements for the process and quality assurance teams.

Provide technical support to operating departments in statistical applications, process capability assessment, and problem solving. Coordinate all plant technical support activities as required and participate on project teams to improve existing processes and raw material handling systems. Capture and implement manufacturing “best practices”; ensure root cause analysis is integral to plant culture.

Support Production, QA, Maintenance, Purchasing and Accounting department needs by developing and maintaining accurate process standard databases. Manage and develop systems that audit the quality of finished goods and raw materials. Maintain a high level of technical reporting within the Technical Department including in-depth analysis of changes in plant operating conditions with identified results achieved.

Oversee all trials for process improvement, raw materials, and new products. Develop a thorough understanding of the raw material technology that can be used to develop year over year Bill of Material planning, and coordinate with Operations to define fitness for use requirements for raw materials.

Perform other duties as assigned.
 

Under This Roof, We Require

Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical preferred) coupled with knowledge/experience leading in a manufacturing process is required. Experience will be considered in lieu of an Engineering degree

5+ years demonstrated experience in a manufacturing environment

Analytical Troubleshooting Techniques, Statistical analysis – Six Sigma Methodology, Quality

Process Improvement principles

Knowledge of regulatory compliance

Ability to communicate, both written, and orally, in English is required

Ability to meet extensive travel requirements in first 1-2 years for the opportunity to visit and train at existing GAF locations

Experience in Google Suite and SAP is beneficial

Ability to translate technical data into a format/language suitable for personnel

Knowledge of engineering fundamentals to include root cause analysis, statistical process control, lean/agile approaches and structured problem solving (Kepner Tregoe, Potential Problem Analysis, Design of Experiments, etc.)

Ability to read and interpret specifications and drawings

Ability to interpret the content and terms of vendor proposals

Must have experience with standard laboratory practices and techniques
