Technical Specialist - Chemistry
Overview

Performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols that require a high level of independent judgment and responsibility. The Clinical Technical Specialist performs at an advanced level requiring extensive knowledge in quality control, instrumentation, calibration and troubleshooting equipment failures. Able to solve most problems independently and can make sound decisions that affect operations. Able to identify and resolve specimen collection problems, etc. Manages internal quality control, evaluates test methods, works with department Director to develop new instrument validation plan. Able to work independently. Can prioritize and work with established timeframes to ensure deadlines are met.

Responsibilities

Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis. Generalist rotating through all departments of the lab. Performs required QC and maintenance to ensure accurage results. Troubleshoots problems as needed. Performs assigned analytical test and task that require moderate to broad independent judgment. Performs Proficiency testing. Performs CAP inspections. Reviews and performs calibrations and maintenance of instrumentation, monitors reagents, standards and QC according to protocols. Maintains and documents laboratory records in keeping with deparment procedures, quality control, corrective actions, maintenance, temperature records, etc. Oversees the chemistry department. Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures, assists with equipment validations, method comparisons and establishment of reference intervals as required. Prepares quality control reports, IQAP data, proficiency test review and documentation. Reviews reports and initiates corrective actions as needed. Maintains quality data and serves on the Lab Quality committee. Works with the Lab Quality Administrator to identify issues and establish department processes that are aligned with regulatory agencies. Works on intradepartmental teams as needed to improve and achieve departmental goals and objectives. Alternates on-call time with other technical specialists to be sure the lab is covered 24 hours a day. 

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science or Associate in Science in medical technology, biology, chemistry, or related science with a year of clinical training in an accredited school of medical technology. Minimum 2 year work experience in a clinical laboratory, 3-5 years preferred. Certification in medical technology or medical laboratory technology by a nationally recognized certification agency with active registration.
