Technical Specialist II Full Time Days

Summary Description

Under general supervision, performs quantitative and qualitative laboratory tests on patient specimens according to standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Analyzes test results and prepares samples for testing.

Calculates test findings and maintains records. Prepares and determines validity of solutions, media stains and various materials in the testing process. Responsible for maintaining and developing point of care programs.Educates and trains non-laboratory personnel and performs competency assessment. Responsible for implementing and coordinating all laboratory tests performed on the patient care floors of the healthcare facility.Acts as liaison between the Laboratory and the Nursing departments. Implements quality assessment program which includes Quality Control (QC) and Proficiency Testing (PT). Develops and distribute procedure manuals. Coordinate test method selections.Reviews patient and QC results for technical and clerical problems/errors. Initiates and facilitates proposals for new POCT instruments. Represent the healthcare facility at POCT committee meetings.Ensure standardization in recording and reporting of results. Maintains instrumentation and informatics. Coordinate and monitor reagents and consumables.Coordinate education and training of staff. In addition, acts as the liaison for quality improvement initiatives. Performs other related duties as determined by lab administration.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology, related science or clinical discipline of Canadian degree in clinical discipline and completion of accredited Technologist Program.

2. Registered as a Medical Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists MT ASCP, National Certifying Agency for Clinical Lab Scientist (NCA), Canadian CSMLS, or registered in specialty area/or equivalent within 18 months of hire

3. Four to five years of progressively more responsible practical laboratory experience in chemistry, hematology, coagulation or related experience.

Skills Required

1. Analytical ability to interpret and analyze test results, gather and interpret data, to identify discrepancies, problems or issues, to obtain advice when precedents are unclear or unavailable and to determine methods for ensuring compliance with functional/organizational/service policies and procedures

2. Communication and/or interpersonal skills for routine contacts with internal and some external customers/stakeholders to discuss primarily factual information. Some discretion and conflict resolution skills are exercised, primarily with people within the unit/function. Courtesy and listening skills are required. The ability to read and comprehend procedures and technical literature in specific functional area is necessary.

3. Project management skills including the ability to define program, project, or process objectives, identify stakeholders and their interests, plan steps, coordinate and allocate human technological and fiscal resources to accomplish goals and objectives in a resourceful yet timely manner.

4. Technical knowledge related to the provision of laboratory services.

5. Working knowledge of computer programs is highly desirable.
