Purpose

Lead a team of three locksmiths while maintaining the security and integrity of the keys and key systems of The University of Texas at Austin. Provide key and lock services to 70,000 faculty, staff, and students for more than 200 university buildings in multiple locations across the Austin area. Manage the workflow for the locksmiths and support projects by adhering to established policies and standards to meet deadlines in a high-production environment. Expected to perform the same duties as the locksmiths and provide leadership for the development of skills and efficiency while offering premier customer service. 

Responsibilities

Provide leadership to include directing, scheduling, and assigning workload based on projects and work orders, and accommodate unplanned, high-priority situations. Must adhere to established procedures and University policies while meeting multiple time-sensitive requests. 

Train, mentor, counsel, discipline, and conduct performance evaluations of locksmiths to maintain a high standard of service delivery and create a team-focused environment. Ensure compliance with applicable policies and standards. Will be responsible for working all facets of locksmithing tasks. Develop open communication and respond to requests for assistance. Possess a team-oriented mindset and foster strong communication within the department, and with customers, and vendors.

Attend project meetings for renovation and new construction projects. Review hardware specifications to ensure campus lock standards are maintained, including brand, key-way, and finish for each facility. Maintain existing and create new key systems. Interpret drawings, hardware schedules, RFIs and related construction documentation.

Work closely with the supervisor to learn job specifications to enable the team to meet all deadlines, coordinate workload, and be aware of project details including parts, labor, and staffing levels. Reports the status of all jobs to the supervisor and acknowledges situations which may cause delays when recognized.

Create, edit, and close work orders in the new work order management system (UT Works). Monitor service requests and work orders and prepare status reports to management. 

Communicate with the supervisor and the administrative team regarding service requests, work orders, keying instructions, customer information, and related information. Excellent oral and written communication skills are needed. Timely and professional responses to inquiries will be required.

Ensure locksmith staff stays current on all safety training requirements, including monthly shop training. Follows all safety protocols including use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when appropriate. Maintain clean, safe, and orderly shop. Monitor and maintain inventory levels.

Other related duties as assigned, including working with other departments within the Campus Operations' portfolio. Occasional overtime is required to support organizational goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 7 years' experience as a locksmith. At least 3 years of supervisory experience in an institutional or government environment. 4 years' experience designing and implementing master key systems. Minimum of 5 years working with contractors and project managers on commercial or government construction projects. Basic skills using Microsoft Word and Excel. Class C driver's license is required. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days of entering Texas as a new resident.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Facility Locksmith certification issued by the National Locksmith Institute. More than 3 years of supervisory experience in the locksmith or service-related trade environment. More than 4 years of experience with master key systems (up to Level 4 GGM systems). Outstanding customer service skills. Understanding and interpreting the importance of adhering to established standards, procedures, and policies. Experience in working in a deadline-driven service environment. Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills. 

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Work Shift

40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 7:30-4:00 Occasional overtime will be necessary which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
