About the role 

The Technical Viticulturist will address the viticultural needs and winegrowing standards of Treasury’s vineyards by identifying, implementing and monitoring vineyard quality and R&D programs.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Technical Viticulture Leadership 

Identify and address viticultural challenges, needs, and opportunities across all internal vineyards within Central Coast region.  Develop, implement, and monitor vineyard enhancement programs aligned with the technical viticulture framework across California Provide technical viticultural support, training, and extension to company vineyards and Grower Relations team  Implement vineyard-related sustainability strategies and certifications to ensure TWE vineyards are leaders in sustainable grape production 

Scientific Robustness and Troubleshooting 

Ensure technical programs are scientifically robust and responsive to seasonal and general vineyard issues  Conduct project work in areas directed by the Director of Technical Viticulture and ensure that work in Central Coast region is prioritized and coordinated with TWE’s other global viticultural regions  Stay current with the latest research, trends and technologies in viticulture and related fields  Evaluate and recommend both new measurement techniques and equipment to improve grape quality, yields, resource efficiency and cost  Analyze and interpret data, drawing out new patterns and interpretation across varied viticultural data sources including GIS

Collaboration and Communication 

Foster strong working relationships with industry organizations and research institutions to advance viticultural interests  Report monthly and seasonally to the Director of Technical Viticulture on activities, regional results, and projects  Work closely with winemakers, vineyard managers, grower relations and other key wine production personnel 

Operational Support 

Manage Assistant Viticulturist position and seasonal harvest-related viticulture roles Assist vineyard operations teams on technical matters, including grape quality standards, variety and clonal evaluation, water application, chemical usage, and vineyard practices  Conduct and record field inspections with winemakers for final grading to ensure maximum end-use potential of fruit and efficient batching and streaming of fruit deliveries during vintage  Deliver yield estimation, phenology assessment, field observation and maturity sampling programs

About you 

 

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in viticulture, plant science, horticulture, agronomy, soil science or related field; advanced degrees with experience in data analysis and field experimentation are preferred Experience viticulture/horticulture crop production  In-depth knowledge of viticultural practices, including yield estimation, pest & disease management, soil health, irrigation, grape quality and sustainable farming.  Experience in managing technical staff  Experience with ag tech platforms, including evaluation, implementation and user adoption 3+ years’ experience in viticulture research, production and/or grower relations PCA license or willingness to obtain one ESRI or similar platform GIS competency Solid competency in Excel, with Python, R or similar data and statistical software beneficial Experience with farm management software such as AgCode Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Advanced computer skills in application software

Pay Transparency Disclosure: The base pay range offered for this position is $85,000 to $93,000 per year and other benefits. These figures represent what we reasonably expect to pay for this position, but the actual compensation offered will depend upon numerous job-related factors, including but not limited to candidate qualifications, skills, experience, education, location, and alignment with market data. Our expectation is that the incumbent will work out of our Paso Robles location.  If the incumbent works out of another location, the wage rate may fall above or below this range. Treasury reserves the right to modify the range in the future.
