The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (E&EB) has a distinguished faculty of 32 whose interests range from population and community ecology to biogeochemistry and ecosystems to evolutionary biology and genetics. The Department, part of both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, has a broad but unified mission in teaching and research: broad in that the interests of the faculty span many levels of organization encompassing genes, genotypes, phenotypes, populations, communities, and ecosystems; and unified in that each of these levels interacts with all of the others. Detailed appreciation of the processes operating at all levels of organization is fundamental to ecological evolutionary understanding.

Position Summary

We are seeking a full-time Technician II with good communication, organizational skills, and a willingness to learn new techniques to support and advance our research examining the evolutionary biology and ecology of the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata). The main responsibility of this position is the husbandry of research fish: maintaining healthy stocks, breeding, and assisting setup of experiments. Other duties include assisting in the conception, implementation, data collection, and analysis of experiments, and contributing to general lab attitudes of inclusivity, communication, and research excellence. We value intellectual curiosity, and opportunities will be available for independent research, helping with the preparation of manuscripts for scientific publication, proposal writing, and presenting results at relevant scientific meetings.

This is a full-time position at 100% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

Experience in research laboratories or animal facilities.

Experience in fish husbandry will be valued but not essential.

Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color. 

Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds. 

Preferred Qualifications

BSc or MSc in Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
