Technician RF Heating Systems
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies. We currently have an employment opportunity for an Electrical/Mechanical Technician to join our DIII-D National Fusion Facility program in San Diego, CA. The DIII-D Tokamak experiment is the largest operating fusion device in the U.S. Under minimal supervision, this position provides support to installation, operation and maintenance of high-power radio frequency systems used to heat and drive current in plasma discharges for controlled fusion research. Frequencies of interest range from110-170 GHz in the millimeter microwave range generated by gyrotron tubes, to 476 MHz and 4.6 GHz generated by klystrons. The rf power levels are typically 1 MW. The high voltage power supply systems associated with these generators supply up to 90 kV at 50 A for each generator. Control electronics, ultra-high vacuum systems and superconducting magnets are critical elements of the systems. The position requires a multi-faceted, individual who is competent in both electrical work and mechanical, with enthusiasm and interest in learning new skills and performing a wide variety of tasks as required. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** + This position may require second shift (evening and weekend) working hours. + Operate high power electrical and water-cooling systems feeding the rf generators and ancillary equipment using computer, PLC, and microprocessor-based controls. + Assist with installation, integration, commissioning, and operation of power supplies, computers, waveguide systems, magnets, and data acquisition in support of scientific experiments focused on developing fusion power. + Assist engineers, physicists, and other technicians troubleshooting and repairing systems, as well as performing regular maintenance and calibration tasks. + Perform ultra-high vacuum systems installation, troubleshooting and maintenance. + Build and populate printed circuit boards with surface mount components and build custom cables, including fiber optics. + Read and interpret schematics. + Set up and operate diagnostic equipment such as DVM’s, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers and function generators. + Be responsible for observing all safety procedures and for personnel safety within the assigned working group as well as others having contact with the equipment.. + Record and document system performance and maintain operational and maintenance logs. + Use hand and power tools to fabricate relatively simple metal objects such as brackets and support plates. + Follow established operating procedures and practices. + Operate the RF generating equipment, train in, gain familiarity with, and qualification in, equipment such as cranes, rigging, and forklifts. + Be flexible in work schedules and task assignments. Some weekend work will occasionally be required. We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply. 46340 **Job Qualifications:** + Typically requires an associate’s degree or experience such as in the military, research, or manufacturing, or the equivalent, with five or more years of experience. The applicant may substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education in any of these areas. + Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, or low levels of radioactivity is required. + The applicant must be familiar with safe operations of low and high voltage power systems, including principles such as resistive heating and voltage-current relationships. Experience with Radio Frequency power systems is highly desired. Practical test instrumentation applications, such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers and signal generators. + Experience with electrical circuit designs, fabrication, assembly and testing; including schematics, wiring diagrams, basic circuit elements and programmable logic controllers (PLC), with FPGAs a plus. Familiarity with circuits to control high power RF systems is a strong plus. Strong soldering skills and reliable cable assembly is important. Thorough familiarity of best practices in grounding and shielding of wire harnesses and enclosures. Hands-on fabrication skill is important. + Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems that include turbo-molecular pumps, ion gauges, oil and dry mechanical roughing pumps, vacuum pump and gauge controllers, metal and O-ring vacuum seals and best practices in the assembly of critical systems that require low levels of contamination. + Ability to safely, responsibly and reliably operate complex systems with training, both unsupervised and in concert with multi-institutional scientific efforts, while maintaining logs of activity. Safety is a top priority. Excellent team participation in the safe and reliable operations of these systems. + The successful candidate will be trained in required skills and in procedures and safety on the job, and will be mentored by qualified personnel in performing any tasks with which the candidate is unfamiliar. **Salary:** $65,410 - $99,888 **Travel Percentage Required** 0 - 25 **Relocation Assistance Provided** Provided **US Citizenship Required?** No **Clearance Required?** No **Clearance Level** null **Workstyle** Onsite General Atomics is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
