We are hiring one (1) full-time, permanent Technologist, Engineering position working out of Rossdale Water Treatment Plant, in Edmonton AB.

The Engineering Design Technologist is accountable for investigating, analyzing and designing engineered solutions for various water main rehabilitation and replacement programs. This includes completing project hydraulic network analysis, running GIS queries, conducting as-built reviews and field investigations, and designing water main replacement construction projects with time spans (longest target completion time) of up to 3 months.

 

The Engineering Design Technologist is accountable to the Manager, Engineering Design Services and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the Manager.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

Provide input to the Linear Projects Team’s plans and directions, and ensure on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. Design and run various GIS queries to assist with project selection for capital projects. Use various GIS software (such as Microstation, ArcGIS, etc.) to create and update data files, thematic maps and project maps to coordinate projects with maintenance activities, document analysis and produce customer communications.Conduct project specific and, under supervision, conduct neighbourhood wide hydraulic analysis to determine ultimate water main sizes and alignments to ensure:adequate fire protection is achieved along with peak hour demand requirementspipe sizes are designed to allow adequate unidirectional flushingwater quality is maintained through looping, dead-end elimination and prevention of oversizing  elimination of redundant pipes does not result in a loss of system reliability or water quality concernsUse hydraulic analysis to confirm that isolations required for construction projects do not result in system pressure drops or large scale fire protection deficiencies.Design various water main upgrade and replacement projects ensuring the chosen solution is constructible, cost effective and improves the overall distribution system reliability.  As part of the design:Ensure base plan and as-built information is accurate and complete.Identify and mediate potential construction conflicts with utilities, landscaping, and private property through field investigations and utility reviews.Identify potential alternatives including abandonment, relocation, slip lining, and trenchless technology to minimize customer impacts and reduce capital construction costs.Evaluate potential requirements or opportunities to extend projects to minimize future customer impacts or improve efficiency.Improve future system operation and maintenance activities by optimizing water appurtenance spacing and locations.Ensure designs are accurate, complete, and are in compliance with the design guidelines and engineering standards prior to requesting drafting resources.Under the supervision of an engineer, design cathodic protection systems (both impressed current and galvanic anodes) for water main networks following NACE standards and guidelines.Review construction drawings produced by the Drafting Technologists to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to submission to engineers/project managers.Review design submissions from various utilities through the City’s Utility Line Assignment Process or other process to ensure they are not in conflict with existing or proposed water and wastewater infrastructure and do not impact EPCOR’s ability to operate and maintain that infrastructure.Review consultant designs for compliance with the Design and Construction Standards.Provide support to other departments and external customers regarding hydraulic analysis, GIS queries, water main design, and ULA support as required.Assist the wastewater inspection assessment team as required which may include the following activities:Assist the wastewater inspection assessment team as required which may include the following activates:Renaming of service televising videos (STV) of service laterals to standard naming format and the creation of tasks against the lateral assets.Converting Private Development as-built construction values to DRAINS asset values and creating inspection tasks for each inspection.Updating / confirming asset inventory database attributes are using field collected information for each asset inspection submitted.Demonstrate a high performance, high discipline, safe, accountable, focused, innovative and achievement-oriented, easy to do business with manner of working.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

Two-year Diploma in Civil Engineering.5+ years of experience in water main construction, inspection and design. Completion of CSTS or a recognized equivalent.A strong understanding of hydraulics related to water distribution system design including a familiarity with computerized hydraulic analysis or simulation software.A strong understanding of design and construction standards and requirements for potable water systems in northern climates.A strong understanding of GIS and related applications typically used by water utilities.Familiarity with basic programming language and queries.Strong ability to use standard software packages (Excel, Access, Word, Sharepoint)Strong analysis, deduction, and decision-making skills

Class: T2 

Hours of work: 80 hours biweekly – Monday to Friday

Wage: Starting at $47.18 per hour 

Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and based on a combination of factors as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
