The Telemetry Monitor Technician (TMT) is responsible for the direct continuous visualization of the rhythm surveillance monitoring system for patients with a compromised cardiac condition. 

They are responsible for identifying and interpreting all rhythm patterns, documenting, recording, and reporting abnormal vital signs to RN. TMT are the vigilant eyes and ears of medical team specializing in advanced telemetry systems to track patient's heart rhythms and vital signs in real time.

This critical role requires a unique blend of technical proficiency, keen attention to detail and strong understanding of EKG reading.  They work closely with the nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals to properly identify any abnormalities or emergencies, ensuring timely interventions that can save lives beyond the technical skills. This position demands excellent communication, the ability to thrive in high pressure, environments and compassionate understanding of patient care.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  Previous experience with nursing unit operations and medical terminology is also required. Previous experience as an EKG Technician, Monitor Technician or direct patient caregiver is preferred.  The candidate will be required to successfully complete a critical care program for rhythm analysis. This includes how to interface with the central station monitor and arrhythmia detection system. As well as detecting and documenting normalities and abnormalities.  Uses effective communication to communicate critical changes to the healthcare team.

FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND RELATED MEASUREMENT CRITERIA:

A.

The monitor tech will attend a cardiac rhythms course and be able to correctly identify all cardiac rhythms including all lethal rhythms

 

 

Passes the cardiac rhythm exam with an 85% or greater and identifies all lethal rhythms.

B.

The Monitor Tech. will provide direct, continuous visualization of rhythm surveillance system.

Accurate and timely identification of all cardiac rhythms.

 

Identifies pacemaker rhythms including pacing with capture, failure to capture, failure to pace, and failure to sense.

Remains watching the monitors at all times. May not leave this duty unless relieved by a qualified staff person.

Responds promptly to alarm signals from monitoring equipment

C.

The monitor tech will interface with the monitoring system.

Locates needed information on the main screen and uses the appropriate Controls

 Locates needed information on the Patient Window and uses the appropriate controls

Admits and Discharges patients and ensures accurate information.

Manages alarms with nursing, physician approval- Verifies patient age and ensures alarm settings are appropriate for adult patient.

Recognizes appropriate rates and rhythms based upon age of the patient.

Reviews patient data

Troubleshoots monitoring system

D.

Maintains Accurate documentation of patient's rhythms:

Completes admission documentation on the appropriate log sheet to include strip, telemetry box number and unit/room.

Obtains and logs rhythms for cardiac monitored patients and mounts strips for telemetry patients every four hours and with a change in rate or rhythm

Documents on Monitor Room Report Sheet (Rhythms)

Maintains MT Communication Log for all communications with telemetry floors

Maintains MT Alarm Log for all changes in alarm settings

Inspects and/or measures rhythm strips for:

a. P wave presence/absence

b. P-P interval duration/regularity

c. PR interval duration

d. QRS complex duration

e. QT interval duration

f. R-R interval duration/regularity

g.ectopic complexes or pauses

E.

The Monitor Tech. will communicate all rate and rhythms to the RN accurately and timely to assure prompt response.

Interacts professionally with colleagues and provides explanations.

Collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient safety

Verifies changes in patient's rhythm and communicates to RN caring for patient.

Knows responsibilities for communicating a Code Blue

a. Calling a code

b. Notifying RN

c. Strip recording

F.

The Monitor Tech. will maintain current knowledge and competency in cardiac monitoring and other areas related to the position.

Maintains current competency as outlined in monitor tech core competency

Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures

Completes all mandatory in-service programs yearly.

Completes annual health assessment forms as required, maintains current inoculations.

Coordinates with Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator in quality improvement efforts related to the cardiac monitoring function.

Able to complete work assignments, accurately, and in a timely manner

Adheres to dress code appearance is neat and clean, maintain patient confidentiality report to work on time and as scheduled

Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations, maintain a good working relationship within the department and other departments answer the phone in a polite manner and communicate in positive safe manner.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 The position is located indoors under normal working conditions.  Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance.  Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

Salary Range:  $17.46-25.32     /hour                   Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
