CRAWFORD, PAONIA AND SWEITZER LAKE STATE PARKS
The “Crawford Complex” consists of three different state parks that are managed primarily out of the Crawford State Park Office. Crawford boasts impressive rock formations below the West Elk Mountain range, and is near the North Rim of Black Canyon National Park. The park contains 337 acres of land and a 400-acre reservoir. Crawford’s 6,600-foot elevation means the climate is mild at any season.
Nestled at an elevation of 6,500 feet beneath the majestic Ragged Mountains, Paonia offers a picturesque alpine escape for camping, picnicking and outdoor photography. With the Gunnison National Forest enveloping Paonia State Park, visitors can immerse themselves in spectacular mountain scenery. Paonia State Park is open seasonally each year, between spring and fall.
Sweitzer Lake State Park serves the community of Delta as a day use area with a popular walking trail, and offers wildlife viewing opportunities, Waterfowl hunting, fishing, a swim beach, and is an outdoor classroom for school field trips. Visitors come to Sweitzer Lake for action-packed boating and waterskiing on busy days, and relaxed nature play on mellow days. In the distance, the majestic San Juan Mountains, the Uncompahgre Plateau and Grand Mesa — the largest flattop mountain in the world — surround Sweitzer Lake.
