Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept As part of the School of Social Work at Portland State University, the Regional Research Institute (RRI) conducts innovative research, training, and program evaluation to address critical community issues.

The RRI is conducting an evaluation of Central City Concern’s Homeless Enhanced Outreach and Response Team (HEART), providing proactive street outreach and care coordination to individuals impacted by houselessness. The program engages folks on the streets, providing basic resources and information, exploring interest and barriers to engaging in more formalized supports, and connecting them with transitional care services to facilitate access and engagement in longer term supports.

Position Summary The research interviewer will conduct in-person interviews in the community with individuals who enroll in services and opt into the study. Interviews will last from 20-40 minutes and include questions about the participant’s characteristics (age, race, education, income, employment, and children), physical and mental health, drug and alcohol use, legal history, and feedback on services received.

Job Responsibilities:

Conduct in-person interviews with program participants in designated community-based locations, including encampments and shelters. Work alongside program staff to navigate data collection and maintain contact with study participants. Maintain at least bi-monthly communication with the PSU evaluation project manager regarding pending and completed interviews. Complete submission of interview data and other documentation in a timely and reliable manner.  Provide feedback regarding data collection instruments and procedures. Adhere to all state and federal privacy regulations, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, and to PSU and the partner organization’s policies and agreements regarding confidentiality, privacy, and security. Attend all mandatory interviewer trainings. Participate in team meetings as requested. Minimum Qualifications from Classification -Two years of experience in research work. The experience must show the gathering of data from various sources; the tabulating or classifying of data into prescribed formats, forms, or reports; and the using of computers to retrieve, edit, or tabulate data; OR

-An Associate’s degree with courses in research methods or statistics and basic computer concepts. Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position Requires a high school diploma, GED, or demonstrated ability to read and write at a sufficient level, Ability to adhere to strict detailed data collection and confidentiality protocols, Ability to learn and use computer data entry systems, Ability to quickly establish rapport with strangers, especially underserved or marginalized populations including gender and sexual minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, people experiencing houselessness, and people who use drugs Ability to walk in an urban area in various weather conditions, Experience taking direction and collaborating on project tasks, Ability to work effectively as a member of a diverse team and with minimal direct supervision, Critical thinking skills, empathy, and patience related to facilitating discussions and collecting interview responses, Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.




Preferred Qualifications Experience conducting standardized interviews/surveys, Experience working with online data entry and/or database software to monitor project operations, Lived and/or professional experience with houselessness.

Work Days/Hours This is a part-time hourly position, averaging 10 hours per month. Hours will fluctuate as program enrollments and interviewing needs change, and will be within the range of 2 – 5 hours per week. Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement This position does not offer benefits; the hourly pay rate is $19.29 – $20.15 depending on experience.
