Details Title The George F. Carrier Postdoctoral Fellowship School Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Department/Area Applied Mathematics Position Description The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University seeks applicants for an endowed, honorific postdoctoral position in widely applied mathematics, the George F. Carrier* Fellowship, with an expected start date of September 1, 2025. The normal duration of the Carrier Fellow appointment is two years, with a potential extension for a third year. Carrier Fellows receive a competitive salary and an annual allocation for research and travel expenses. We are looking for applicants interested in an opportunity for independent research that reflects the spirit of George Carrier’s approach and complements that of the current faculty in Applied Mathematics, broadly interpreted, including those in the Harvard School of Engineering, the Department of Physics and elsewhere within the University. Current faculty interests are in applied mathematics and computational science in biological, earth science, engineering and physical contexts, and, especially, in biophysics, multiscale fluid mechanics, machine learning, medicine, neuroscience and soft materials. Jefferson Coolidge Professor of Mathematics at Harvard and one of the pre-eminent applied mathematicians of his generation. He had a special talent for describing complicated physical phenomena mathematically, and he did so with great facility over a wide range of problems that included fluid dynamics, elasticity, combustion and natural hazards. Basic Qualifications Candidates are required to have a doctorate or terminal degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or a related area by the expected start date.
