Provide administrative management and oversight of research activities in the areas including Actinide, Geochemical, and Separation Sciences (20%). Conducts world-leading research in one or more areas within AGSS (80%). Reports directly to the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division Director. Specific responsibilities are:
Conduct world-leading research in separation sciences, heavy element chemistry, and/or geochemical interfacial processes
Contribute to the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division and within the AGSS Theme
Manage theme research and administrative activities with the support of AGSS group leaders and Division administration
Provide leadership and support for AGSS efforts to respond to new funding opportunities and maintain core programs
Ensure staff access to facilities to perform their research
Ensure productive relationships with sponsors
Communicate needs of the Theme to Division leadership
Provide leadership for safety and security
Foster career development for all staff members within AGSS
Support diversity and inclusion within the Division
Other duties as assigned by the Division Director
Position Requirements
This level of knowledge and skill is normally acquired through advanced formal education (usually Ph.D. degree level in chemistry, physics, engineering, or geoscience) and 15+ years of experience in research including directing the research of Ph.D.-level scientists and engineers
Comprehensive skill in effectively developing and managing fundamental research programs, research staff, and resources
Good Communication and interpersonal relationship skills
Research skills in separation sciences, heavy element, processes at geochemical interfaces
Extensive experience in writing and defending research proposals and archival journal manuscripts
Considerable knowledge of general physical, inorganic, solution, and interfacial chemistries. Considerable skill in formulating, planning, prioritizing, conducting creative, innovative research, and skills in mentoring research staff
Good knowledge of DOE and Argonne policies, rules, and regulations
Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
