Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks & Recreation is seeing a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to p rogram and implement recreational activities to meet the needs of individuals with physical, mental, emotional, and developmental disabilities. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist will provide therapeutic programming by utilizing the Therapeutic Recreation process for individuals with varying disabilities.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $42,629 - $49,023
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Provides therapeutic recreation programming and instruction for participants with varying disabilities.
+ Plans and instructs community collaborations.
+ Conducts intake assessments, completes weekly progress notes, and develops discharge summaries on program participants.
+ Provides varying levels of assistance such as resolving issues, addressing physical, social, and emotional needs and handling emergencies as needed.
+ Coordinates special events and workshops.
+ Represents the department at community resource fairs.
+ Supervises 560-hr. internships.
+ Assists Senior Recreation Supervisor II with administrative duties as needed. Attends FAPT Meetings with NDHS.
+ Operates 15-passenger, wheelchair accessible van and transports participants to and from programs when necessary.
+ Monitors budget expenditures; assists with the budget preparation and makes recommendations by estimating materials and supplies required for programs and special projects; purchases and maintains equipment and supplies.
+ Responds to patron inquiries regarding programs.
+ Operates a computer and a variety of software including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook).
+ Operates the facility in the absence of the supervisor.
+ This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication, organizational and customer service skills and the ability to effectively interact with and contribute to the growth and development of diverse citizen groups.
+ Ability to see, hear, stand/walk, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, work in confined spaces, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications.
Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general profession or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Therapeutic Recreation or similar area of study.
Six months experience.
The preferred candidate will possess the following:
+ Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) Certification
+ CPR/AED and First Aid Certification
+ Experience programming in a Therapeutic Recreation setting
Additional Information & Requirements
Wok Location: Therapeutic Recreation Center, 180 E. Evans Street, Norfolk, VA 23503
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week Occasional nights and weekends and holiday required.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
