Thermal Analyst
Mechanical Engineer II
NASA Glenn Research Center
Cleveland, Ohio
HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran- and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
HX5 is currently seeking a Thermal Analyst to join our team in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform thermal analyses supporting the Fission Surface Power (FSP) technology development project under the Technology Demonstration Mission (TDM) program. NASA is working with the Department of Energy (DOE) and industry to design a fission power system that would provide up to 40 kilowatts of power – enough to continuously run 30 households for ten years. A future lunar demonstration will pave the way for sustainable operations and even base camps on the Moon and Mars. Thermal power produced during nuclear fission must be converted to electricity before use. Brayton converters solve this by using differences in heat to rotate turbines within the converters. However, current Brayton converters waste a lot of heat, so NASA has challenged companies to make these engines more efficient.
The scope of work includes developing a Thermal Desktop model of the 40 kW FSP Government Reference Design system and a 10 kW Brayton system with heat pipe hot side thermal transport that would be compatible with a capable lander as well as develop thermal models for various of the lunar surface. Also provide thermal system oriented risk assessments, including risks of lunar dust to thermal systems. In addition, need to assist in the development and tracking of thermal requirements.
Required Skills:
Ability to design and develop thermal models of NASA project hardware within Thermal Desktop. Knowledge of thermodynamic cycles, particularly Brayton and Stirling. Strong fundamentals in the area of thermal analysis and mechanical design. Capable of analyzing and presenting data gathered from thermal models. Knowledge of spacecraft thermal control techniques including active and passive thermal management. Team oriented with the ability to work independently as well.Education/Experience:
Completed at least a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, from an accredited program, with the following education and experience:
Bachelor of Science degree with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience Master of Science degree with 0 to 3 years of relevant experienceOther Position Requirements:
Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position. Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.HX5 offers a competitive salary and benefits package to include:
