This role is based on-site at Permobil's brand new cutting-edge innovation center in Birsta, Sundsvall, at the state-of-the-art facility, which unites research, manufacturing, and sustainable practices under one roof. Our commitment is to cultivate an inclusive environment that enhances accessibility, participation, and the development of world-class mobility solutions for the future.
Project Overview
Medical device companies are increasingly using computational models and simulations to replicate human anatomy and physiology to create better products for the users. Human body models (HBMs) are widely used in the automotive industry for crash test simulations. These HBMs are extremely complex and require significant computational resources. Simplified versions of these human body models are necessary to study comfort and the possibility of pressure injuries for wheelchair users. These HBMs are used during the design, testing, and optimization stages of new product development, as well as for assessing the performance of existing products. The project will contribute to Permobil meeting its target in developing user-centric products by improving comfort and reducing pressure injuries for users.
The objective of this thesis project is to develop a parametric CAD model of human torso section (both male and female) using modeling tool SolidWorks and integrate it with the existing parametric models available at Permobil. This includes a detailed literature review on hyper-elastic material data for finite element analysis (FEA), HBM applications in comfort and pressure injury evaluations, and finalizing the parameters that are necessary to be assessed for understanding the user comfort and possibility of pressure injuries. Finite element models of these HBMs will be developed using simulation tools like Ansys Mechanical or LS Dyna using actual CT scan data. These simulation models will be validated using experimental data from pressure maps and vibration measurements.
The expected outcomes of this project are:
+ A detailed literature review on human body models with a focus on material data and applications.
+ Parametric human body models (CAD & FEA models) which will be used for virtual comfort and pressure evaluations.
+ A validation study that demonstrates the accuracy of the model.
+ A detailed report that describes the methodology used to develop the model and presents the results of the validation study.
