Distinguishing Features of the Class This is responsible work involving the operation of a dump truck and related vehicles and equipment in support of the construction, maintenance and repair of City-County streets, roads, and sewage collection system. The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Road Superintendent or Sewer Maintenance Superintendent, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with the Road Superintendent, supervisors, employees, business owners, homeowners, and the general public. This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Teamsters Local #2. Duties/Responsibilities Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only) + Operates trucks and pulls trailers to haul, distribute and place asphalt, sand, gravel, equipment and other roadway surface or construction materials; + Operates trucks, snowplows and sanding equipment in all weather conditions; + At times, performs lubrication and service maintenance duties on all types of vehicles and heavy equipment, in addition to daily vehicle inspections. + Replaces and repairs traffic and street signs as needed; + Operates flusher truck, street sweeper, garbage truck, and others as required; + Removes junk, garbage and other debris as assigned; + Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized; + Performs related work as required. + Perform all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc. + Perform all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements. + Act responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards. + Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities + Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of dump trucks, street sweepers, snow plows, flushers and other street maintenance equipment, transports with low boy, belly dump and pup trailer; + Good knowledge of service and lubrication maintenance to vehicles, trucks and other operating equipment is preferred. + Good knowledge of traffic safety and laws as they apply to the operation of assigned equipment; + Skill in the operation of trucks and other assigned equipment; + Ability to communicate well with supervisors, other employees, and the general public; + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisory personnel, and the general public; + Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions; + Ability to perform a wide variety of vehicle operation tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines, in both normal and emergency situations and in all forms of weather; + Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; + Experience loading equipment on low boy. + Must have knowledge and experience in all regulations pertaining to chaining and securing all types of heavy equipment on the transport trailer and experience of loading heavy equipment on the transport trailer, for example, backhoe, dozers, loader, land, ect. Acceptable Experience and Training + Graduation from high school; and + Considerable experience operating large trucks and construction equipment; or + Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work. Required Special Qualifications + Possession of a Commercial Drivers License issued by the State of Montana. Some positions within this class may require possession of a Commercial Drivers License with specialized endorsements; + Class A endorsement. + Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and register with the Federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. + Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.
