Senior Accounting Officer, Field Accounting & Operations, Canadian Commercial Banking

 

Purpose


Contributes to the overall success of the Canadian Business Banking Field Accounting and Operations team in Canadian Commercial Banking ensuring the accurate accounting and reporting of the Asset Based Lending portfolio. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with established accounting standards, procedures and internal controls.

 

Accountabilities:


Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

 

Responsible for the maintenance of the Asset Based Lending portfolio in accordance with the CICA Handbook, IRFS, Roynat’s, and the Bank’s policies and procedures by:   

 

•    Maintaining general ledger, sub-ledgers, and trial balance; performing general ledger account activity analysis and completing account reconciliations
•    Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting for Roynat and The Bank of Nova Scotia
•    Liaising with Canadian Banking Finance, Executive, and others as required to provide and obtain information
•    Completing accounting functions including but not limited to wire transfers, loan advances and repayments, monitoring cash flow, accounts payable, journal entries, reconciliations, interest expense/income calculations, invoicing, and reconciliations

 

Maintaining the operation of the portfolio receivable systems; Stucky and Monthly Trial Balance by:

 

•    Completing all the daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual processing and ensuring all the reporting is printed and completed
•    Assist with the running the day end and monthly system process
•    Maintaining and keeping all tables up to date within the systems i.e. rates

 

Provide excellent customer service, meeting Bank’s Scotia Service Standards by:

 

•    Responding quickly and accurately to inquiries from Management, support units, customers, suppliers and other Bank departments
•    Resolving transaction issues in accordance with Service Standards and/or escalating when necessary
•    Maintaining the confidentiality of information and ensuring security of data and applications
•    Ensure that all reporting deadlines are met


Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

 

Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Education / Experience / Other Information:
     
     

Functional competencies: 

 

•    Highly motivated, innovative and results-oriented individual with excellent analytical, written and communication skills 
•    Proactively seeks to collaborate with, and help, team members and managers and seeks opportunities to collaborate within and beyond one’s own department
•    Solid understanding of the financial services industry, with particular emphasis on multinational and corporate clients/operations  

     

Education and Experience: 

 

•    Post secondary education: University degree
•    Working towards a recognized Accounting designation (CPA) preferable 
•    3 to 5 years related experience in a position of similar responsibility
•    Banking/financial experience highly desirable
•    Knowledge and understanding of IFRS, banking regulations and public reporting
•    Highly proficient with Excel
•    Strong proficiency with MS Office applications - Windows, Word, and automated GL systems
•    Proven/strong Analysis skills and ability
•    Knowledge of the functionalities of Stucky NT/ABL is valuable, however not required.
•    Experience in the following areas is desirable:  Federal and Provincial Taxes; Lease and/or Loan Accounting; Automated General Ledger environment
 

                                        
Working Conditions:


•    Given the large amount of time spent working with a computer and calculator, the concentrated use of sight and touch is required for reading, writing, analysis and problem solving of data and product files. Month-ends, quarter-ends and year-ends bring longer working hours and weekend work in order to meet deadlines.
