Tool & Die Technician II

Position Summary: 

Bush Hog is one of the most recognized and successful names in the Agricultural Market. The Tool and Die Technician II is a key position in the Company and will support and contribute to the company goals of profitability, return on investment, inventory turnover, and accident prevention.  The Tool and Die Technician II will support manufacturing and production levels by building or repairing of jigs needed to manufacture parts.  Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose and/or numerical control machines and machining centers to fabricate metal parts; fits and assembles machined parts into complete units.  Studies blueprints, sketched, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operation and sets up all tooling and specified requirements.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Focus, communicate, encourage and contribute to safety in all aspects of the job and all company meetings. Set up dies to meet production requirements. Determine the condition and diagnose the problem of a die taken out of service. Make recommendation to Engineering on necessary repairs, replacement and impact to production timing. Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material on work piece as guides for subsequent welding or cutting. Selects aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments accessories and materials on machines such as mill, lathes, jig borers, grinders and sharpeners. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enters command to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and makes necessary adjustments. Fits and assembles designed parts into complete assemblies using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand/power tools or presses. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks. Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment. Complete first piece inspection to ensure quality of parts. Perform all other duties assigned by Supervisor.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

Complicated math skills and reading skills needed. Must be able to read and use precision tools. Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions, able to make minor decisions involving some judgment in carry out instructions. Capable of performing decisive measurements. Minimum dexterity required for use of hand and power tool. Ability to operate under pressure. Ability to lift, up to 50 pounds alone and 100 pounds with assistance. Must have good communication skills, both verbal and written.

 

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED required. Additional vocational training a plus. 5+ years’ experience as Welder and/or Machine Operator required. Experience as machinist preferred. Knowledge of machine ability of materials and machine shop theory as well as layout techniques.
